It was a busy night on Saturday, Nov. 23. Though I was at the university for my blues show the Hotrock Blues Beat, I wasn’t able to catch Hawksley Workman down the hill. Mainly, because I wanted to catch Chris “Old Man” Luedecke at the Lethbridge College Cave and couldn’t do both as they both started at the same time.
 As it was, I barely made it to the Lethbridge Folk Club show.

 I was impressed with the audience, I thought that show might suffer due to Workman.
It was not to be.

 Luedecke and his hot band including Michael O’ Brien, drummer Jamie Thompson and bassist Charlotte Cornfield had a good sized, attentive crowd plus a couple dancing in the aisles to Luedecke’s chipper banjo powered indie folk music.

 I only caught the last couple songs, most of which came from his latest CD “Easy Money.”
 I just caught the heartfelt “ If I Skipped A Stone,” from the new CD.

 I missed the title track but caught a cool rendition of his pirate treasure song “ Money Pit” though he had switched to an acoustic guitar for it. He noted he could see Oak Island from his window and observed nobody had found anything there yet.

 He slowed things down for a love song, chuckling “I’ve been writing love songs to my wife for 21 years and it’s amazing how terrible some of them are.”

He followed that up with a Celtic tinged song “about death.”

Of course, he was called back for an encore and strapped his banjo back on for crowd favourite “I Quit My Job.”
