The New Testaments bring pop and rap to Brewhouse

I keep hearing about the New Testaments, but have never  seen them, but caught them at the Canadian Brewhouse, mid set, Friday, Sept. 24 to an enthusiastically dancing and cheering crowd.

They played a familiar sounding  set of contemporary pop and R and B music featuring saxophone, keyboards, two guitars and lot of loud bass, drums and percussion.

I caught them at the end of a set. A couple local rappers including LRev performed during the set break.

Danica Sommer took centre stage to begin the next set,  a wretched sound mix meant she and  the rest of the band were completely drowned out  by the bassist and drummer’s funk fuelled groove, no matter where I stood in the room.

I only stayed for a few songs  in the next set, which opened with  Sommer taking centre stage.

She didn’t unleash her powerhouse voice as much as  I expected, but highlight was  Outkast’s “Hey Ya.”

They open up tonight’s rap battles at the Owl Acoustic Lounge at 6 p.m., Sept. 30.
