Jessica Heine, Kelly Tschritter and bassist Sir Touby are blending a mesh of different musical styles during their Prairie to Oceans Tour, which stops by the Mocha Cabana on Thursday, Oct. 21.
“It’s two completely different styles of music. I’m more story based. I basically tell people really interesting stories about people. And Kelly creates soundscapes,” said Jessica Heine, from Pincher Creek, en route to a show in Twin Butte.
“I feel like my songs are a lot more literal.There’s a lot more going on beneath the surface of her songs,” continued Heine adding the tour together has gone well.
“It’s gone really great. The three of us have never done a tour this extensive. We’ve learned a lot about touring,” Heine continued adding audience response has been fantastic.
“(Playing together) has really elevated our performances. It gives us motivation to continue,” continued the Edmonton based singer/songwriter, adding the musicians have toured before and have hit several familiar places as well as some new ones.
“It is really beginning to feel a lot like a band now,” she said adding she fronts two different bands of her own in Edmonton.
As both Tschritter and Heine have solo careers, they will be helping each other out on each other’s songs.
“I’ll add harmony vocals and I play electric guitar, and she’ll play accordion on one of mine and also plays some drums. Sir Touby plays bass on all of the songs,” explained Heine, a classically trained vocalist.
“I’ve got a degree in classic vocals, which is very different from what I do. But I think it provides a really good base for what I do, because I’m very lyric based and I like to be able to sing a beautiful melody,” she continued adding she has played the Mocha Cabana a couple times as well as Henotic, once with Tschritter.
She would like to record a CD with Tschritter.
“We are interested in a CD. But we are recording our shows. We’re working on free downloads, where if you buy a CD, you get a free download as well,” she continued.
“We sound different together than we do on our records,” she said.
They will be playing two sets beginning at 6 p.m. at the Mocha Cabana, Oct. 21.
“It will be mostly original material, but we play a couple covers in the second set. It will be really nice and beautiful time. It’s a very nice way to spend a couple hours,” she concluded.
