There is music for everyone this week, especially on Saturday night.
One of the biggest shows this week is with mindbending Vancouver/ Victoria, punk jazz pioneers Nomeansno who are in Lethbridge to play the Slice with Ford Pier and Lustre Creame, Oct. 23. Tickets cost $20.
For something a little more “deadly” check out the annual Lethbridge Zombie walk, so look for zombies of all shapes, sizes, colours and wounds to be wandering around downtown.
They will be congregating at Average Joes afterwards with Sleeping with Tuesday, the Living Luca and Smokestack Jacks performing.
There will be prizes for best zombie. If you can’t do your own makeup, Jennifer Bailey will be on hand to turn you into a zombie, for a nominal fee. The walk takes place at 6 p.m.in Galt Gardens.
For something slightly different on Saturday, The Deathbridge Derby Dames roller derby team have their first home match this weekend.
They will be playing the Central Alberta Roller Derby Association Missfits of Mayhem at the Lethbridge Exhibition Park North Pavillion.
Doors open for this licensed event at 6:30 p.m. with the game starting at 7:30 p.m. There will be an after party after the game at Bo Diddlys. Get tickets from Steel Sass or any derby girl for $10.
Also on Saturday, the Darryl Düus blues band are back to tear the roof off the Owl Acoustic lounge.
Calgary folk/ pop singer Erin Ross also returns to Lethbridge this week to play the Owl Acoustic Lounge on Friday, Oct. 22. If you missed local burlesque duo the Brazen Hussies’ performance at Average Joes a few weeks ago, catch them at Jimmy’s Pub and Brasserie where they will be performing with the Cheap Thrill Billies, Saturday night.
Also Saturday, there is a concert for a good cause— beating cancer. The Bamboo Guppies will be performing at the Lethbridge Exhibition.
And if you missed eclectic folk/ jazz/cabaret Vancouver band Blackberry Wood, catch them at the Slice, Oct. 24.
For something more in the jazz millieu, in addition to Jazzerwocky at the Slice, Oct. 20 featuring poet John Lent as well as The Porter Davidson Quartet from the University of Lethbridge jazz program along with jazz/ blues band, T Gordon Leigh and the Naked Ear, Jazz/ folk singer Trina Nestibo returns to the Slice, Oct. 22.
There are several other big shows this week including country/pop songer Johnny Reid at the Enmax Centre, Oct. 23.
If you don’t have tickets to that sold out sow, be sure to catch rising country stars Jo Hikk, who play Average Joes, Oct. 22 or rising star Tatum Williams at Casino Lethbridge, both Friday and Saturday.
If you like metal, Fall City Fall, Strangers, Fame and Berserker play an all ages show at the Lethbridge Legion, Oct. 20. Berserker also plays the Vent with Tarantuja and Caste of Shadows that same night.
Last but definitely not least, Andy Maize and Michael Johnston of Toronto based country tinged ’90s indie pop band the Skydiggers are playing the Slice, Oct. 25. They are currently writing music for a new CD. They had a score of hits in the early ’90s including “Monday Morning” and “I Will Give You Everything.” There will be a $10 cover.
For the more classical minded, the Lethbridge Symphony’s production of the Broadway musical City of Angels takes place Oct. 18-20 at the Yates Memorial Centre, at 8 p.m. each night.
And if all this live music inspires you to take the stage yourself, there are a plethora of open mics this week including the Folk Club’s open mic at the Wolf’s Den on Friday. The New Weather Machine hosts the jam at the Slice tonight, which is also a farewell to City TV reporter Norm LeBus, who is a big supporter of the local music scene.
