Word On The Street and jazz this week

Arts Days kicks off  this week with the Word On the Street Festival, Sept. 21. The annual celebration of all things reading and writing features  a lot of authors, First Nations  history, fun for the family, poetry, comics and more.

Fred  Penner , known for his big hit “the Cat Came Back,” finishes off an excellent afternoon of music beginning at 11 a.m. with Calgary blues band the Eric Braun Band.
 Local country musician Tyra Whitson follows them. There will be more blues with the Steve Keenan Band at 1:35. Then local folk/ roots/ blues band In Cahoots take the stage. Willy Big Bull will tell stories and sing songs inspired by the Blackfoot people. And Fred Penner will entertain kids and adults alike at  4 p.m. Admission is free to attend the vent, outside the Lethbridge Public library.


 But that isn’t all.
 The week starts with laughs as a Tina Randell’s “Oh Me Nerves’” Newfoundland comedy show rolls into town at the Lethbridge Legion, Sept. 18. The show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30.
And Kingston’s Tom Savage returns to Lethbridge in support of his new solos CD “Great Beyond.”


 The Slice continues to rock the rest of the week.
 Instead of their usual open mic on Thursday, The Slice has a big rock show, Sept. 19. Kelowna based rock band The Carbons , fresh off recording their new CD with the Trews, play the Slice with Regina based blues rockers Dead Levee and new local alternative rock band the Cayley.

 The Slice stays in the blues rock vein with an excellent blues rock show, Friday, Sept. 20 with Mexico born keyboardist Rob Lamonica, Colorado blues guitarist Johnny O and drummer Ignacio Chavez. They will be in town for a few shows. Rob Lamonica and local bluesman Keith Woodrow play the Stoketown’s brunch series, Sept. 21 from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.. Lamonica is also playing  the Telegraph Taphouse, Sept. 22.
 If your tastes are more classical music, Montreal based pianist Ryan Kolodziej returns  to play Piano and Pie at the Galt Museum, Friday Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m.

 Kolodziej will be playing Joseph Haydn's "Variations in F minor" and several works of Chopin. Tickets are $25 adults, $25 youth and students.


 Theoretically Brewing is your place for alt folk music, Sept. 20. They feature  Webb aka Drake McCheyne’s solo project, Son of A Baker, Mickey Hayward of Cope and several other bands’ solo alter ego, Jess Tollestrup and Fawns. Admission is $10 for the show which begins at 7 p.m.


 Theoretically Brewing also hosts Ottawa folk musician Rory Taillon and local folk/country trio Prairie Huckster. Sept. 24. There is a $10 cover for the show, which begins at 7 p.m.
 The Owl rocks on Friday night with local band Biloxi Parish and Calgary rock band Free the Cynics and indie rock band The Northern Coast.


 Saturday night rocks.
 Vancouver based Metallica tribute Master of Justice play Average Joes, Sept. 21. The show starts at 8 p.m Tickets cost $16 through Eventbrite.
 Completely opposite to that, local electro-pop musician Tyler Vanden Dool kicks off his latest tour at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Saturday, Sept. 21. Local pop band Stars From Streetlights will be sharing the bill with them. Admission is by donation.


 Things get loud and funky at the Slice, Sept. 21, with local funk trio Adequate and Calgary Maritime Celtic band The Nova Scotiables. And later on on Tuesday, Sept. 24, The Slice features Fort St. John rockers Chase the Bear.
James Oldenburg’s band Bandemonium plays Casino Lethbridge, Friday and Saturday as well.


 Local singing teacher and vocalist Bridgette Yarwood returns to the music scene with a double date at the Watertower Grill with her jazz and blues duo on Friday and Saturday.
And also in the jazz vein, Josh Davies and HBO3’s jazz jam returns to the Owl Acoustic lounge. The jazz jam is Saturday afternoon, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m.
