The second Theatre Xtra production of the season is going to be a “good” one, Oct. 28-30 at the University of Lethbridge David Spinks Theatre.
Canadian playwright Michael Lewis MacLennan’s “ The Good Egg,” will take the stage Oct. 28 at 8 p.m.
“It’s a comedy about relationships,” succinctly summarized rookie director Colleen Trumble.
“It starts off when a mature, successful couple, Brody and Robin decide they need something to complete their lives. And that something is a child,” she elaborated, adding the play features actors David Adie, Ryan Novak and Janah Holgate.
“Complications arise when they realize they aren’t able to conceive, so they meet Wade, a sperm donor. But problems arise when Wade and Robin get a little too close and Robin and Brody’s relationship is put under pressure,” continued the sixth year drama and education major.
“So what’s going to happen, will chaos ensue or willl they Robin and Brody make their relationship work?”
She siad the play is coming together well, thanks to a cast and crew who have been working hard since auditions took place at the end of September.
“I thought becuase it is my first time directing for a big audience, I wanted to choose a play I liked. I found the lines to be really engaging. And I really loved how the characters are not stereotypical, they are meaty and well drawn. They are characters the actors can really have fun with,” she continued adding she also had to find a play Theatre XTra could stage with a budget of $50.
So the set is very sparsely decorated as usual with a bed, a toilet, a couple chairs and a massive black bridge providing the backdrop to everything.
“The bridge is an important part of the play,” she said.
“We couldn’t look at anything huge likeThe Rocky Horror Picture Show or Hair or anything like that,” Trumble laughed adding the biggest challenge was buillding the bridge on stage with a tiny budget.
