The Phonemes www.thephonemes.com or  www.myspace.com/thephonemes  are Vancouver-area musicians Magali Meagher and Associates (Associates have included through time and space: liz forsberg, matias rozenberg, katie crown, stephanie markowitz, david meslin, john tielli, and others)

The Phonemes prove that incredible things often come in small packages. The musical project of Magali Meagher, the Phonemes’ sinewy lyrical imagery finds purchase in simple, melody driven songs and layered rhythm. The Phonemes latest recording released on Blocks Recording Club “There’s something we’ve been meaning to do” was recorded by Efrim Menuck (A Silver Mt. Zion, Godspeed you black emperor) at thee mighty hotel2tango (Arcade Fire, Vic Chesnutt) and features ubiquitous wunderkind Final Fantasy. Bandmates and friends Matias Rozenberg (Matias, Consumption Records) and Liz Forsberg (Jonasson) say farewell to the Phonemes on this record but not without laying down some of their signature bass, drum and harmonic sounds.

Magali’s musical career has seen her recording and playing guitar and drums in the Hidden Cameras, backing up American indie music icon Daniel Johnston on drums, touring across Canada with Bob Wiseman and Kids in the Hall Scott Thompson and collaborating with a host of musical projects from off-kilter 60’s-girl-pop-inspired outfit HANK  to playing assorted found objects and singing in John Tielli’s Metal Kites.  In 2007, Magali found herself on the stage of the Lucille Lortel Theatre – Lotte Lenya’s stomping ground– where she starred in Maggie Macdonald’s rock opera “The Rat King” at the New York International Fringe Festival.

The Metal Kites www.myspace.com/metalkites  are a Toronto based John Tielli accompanied by talented folks such as Magali Meagher (the Phonemes), Doug Tielli (the silt), Dan Goldman (Luxury Pond, Snowblink), Julien Beillard (Wooden Stars), Erika Werry, Chris Banks, Andrew Barker and Steve Mckay

Despite the laws of physics, John Tielli's Metal Kites have taken flight. This unusual and beautiful feat was accomplished with the aid of male and female voices, guitars, synths, drums and an assortment of unconventional sounds including tapping, howling, clanking, thumping, swishing, and the melancholic cries of a theremin. These textures along with haunting melodies and dreamlike stories of spiritual and intellectual awakening bring to mind the subconscious explorations of such influences as The Pixies, the Talking Heads, Bob Dylan and film maker David Lynch. Each Metal Kites song seems to create a little world of it's own with unexpected twists that keep you hanging on to every last word and note.

John Tielli's previous Ottawa based ensemble Clark the band (see friend link) released 2 critically acclaimed albums, and the lineup in the early to mid 2000s included Time Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara who would later go on to join the celebrated Arcade Fire. Members of Wooden Stars (Andrew McCormack) and Hilotrons (Mike Dubue, PHil Bova) also contributed to Clark the band recordings and performances.

Metal Kites currently is somewhat of a rotating roster of engaging personnel that includes Magali Meagher of the Phonemes, Dan Goldman and John's younger brother Doug Tielli of the Silt. These musicians have also contributed to the upcoming Metal Kites debut CD which was recorded by Jeff McMurrich at 6 Nassau in Toronto. The album, tentatively titled “Fireflies” is expected to be available this summer.

Here's the video of "Rabbit In the Hat" created by John Tielli and Casey McGlynn that was produced with a grant by CTC's Bravo!FACT (Foundation to assist Canadian Talent).
