He is also active as a composer, having won the prestigious 2002 Brussels Jazz Orchestra composition competition in Brussels, Belgium. Renter completed his Doctorate of Music and Masters of Music in Composition at the University of
North Texas at Austin. His undergraduate degree comes from the University of Lethbridge, where he is currently part of the music faculty.
He has also served as Director of Jazz Studies and Saxophone at Oklahoma City University.
He was winner of the First International Jazz Composition Contest in Brussels, Belgium.       In addition to playing with his own quartet,
David has performed with a wide-variety of jazz artists, including: Kenny Wheeler, Bob Brookmeyer, Maria Schneider, Joey Baron and Peter Erskine. His current quartet is comprised of James Oldenburg on guitar, Paul Holden on bass and Brad Brouwer on drums. Their music covers a wide variety of styles, including straight-ahead and more contemporary jazz styles.

 Joel Miller

This Montreal saxophonist is no stranger to the Medicine Hat JazzFest. Having performed here in the past with his group Mandala, Miller is known for his interesting and intelligent compositions, as well as his engaging saxophone sound and stellar technique. A graduate of McGill, Joel has been building his reputation ever since with a recording career that spans 12 years. Joel has been the recipient of an array of accolades over the years, including the Grand Jazz Award at the Montreal International Jazz Fest and an Opus Award for the concert of the year from Le Conseil Québécois de la  Musique. He has toured, recorded, and collaborated  with such jazz luminaries as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ben  Monder, Ingrid Jensen, Steve Amirault, and Gary
Versace as well as Denzal Sinclaire and Brad Turner.  On this tour, Joel plans to focus on compositions  from his latest two albums, Tantramar and Mandala,
as well as some new compositions written specifically for this touring group and some of the  standard repertoire with the Miller stamp, of course. Joining Joel will be Eric St. Laurent on  acoustic and electric guitars, Fraser Hollins on bass and Martin Auguste on drums.
Tickets cost $15.
