 Daniel Huscroft

DON’T BE FOOLED BY DANIEL HUSCROFT’S UNPOLISHED EXTERIOR. Behind the bushy beard and dusty boots lies a masterful musician who cut his teeth on a piano, and picked up his first violin when he was five. His new album, Here is Just For Now, marries country, roots and soul, while captur- ing his mountain upbringing in the Canadian Kootenays. He has created his own brand of evergreen soul, blending acoustic guitar, strings and piano in 13 stunning tracks.
Though a seasoned guitarist, producer and award-winning songwriter Here is Just For Now is Huscroft’s first effort as a frontman. Funded in part by a grant from the Canadian Council for the Arts, and co-produced by Daniel Mendez (Dashboard Confessional, Duran Duran), the album, like Huscroft himself, intentionally lacks the polished production one expects from a studio veteran.
Stripping the recording of drums and amps seemed to Huscroft the only way to convey the honesty of his melodies. With support from his sister—fiddler Zav RT—and talented musicians from throughout BC, Huscroft recorded each track in a live, continuous take. But in spite of their raw quality, his classical training shines through, bringing depth of complexity to each composition.
The album abounds with what he calls “Kootenay moments”—tracks in- spired by the generations of Huscrofts who made their home and their life- blood in the southern BC hills and valleys. The result is a sense of haunting mountain solitude in unexpectedly sweet songs, and gruff soulful vocals.
Fittingly, while recording Here Is Just For Now, Huscroft lived with vari- ous friends throughout BC. Having no fixed address offered a breadth of experience to draw from. Even with the growing success of Here Is Just For Now, Huscroft continues to choose experience over security, and honesty over production values. And out of that seeming disarray he’ll continue to produce perfectly orchestrated forest songs and mountain masterpieces.
