Scythia

Scythia is a Vancouver based folk metal  band featuring the oboe of death  combining punk with metal as well as classical elements with a touch of folklore.

Naraka started off in 2009 as a solo project by Vanan Kesavan. He recorded and released his first self-titled album “Naraka” in the spring of 2010. The following summer he went on to recruit a full line up and the band began to play their first shows. Aaron Newton joined in June 2010 as the drummer (while the band had seen line-up changes in other departments). 2011 saw new opportunities for the band. With a full line-up intact, the band got a spot on a portion of [singaporean band] Rudra's Canadian Tour. The late-summer and fall was busy time for the band as well. Several shows in the Medicine Hat/Southern AB area. As of late 2011 the band has been putting together new material which will see the band's second release and first full-length album to be released in 2012.
Description
Raised in a Hindu family, founding member Vanan was heavily influenced by South Indian Carnatic music as a child. Combing this with heavy, groovy rifts, and haunting melodies, the bands first album has laid a solid foundation for the bands sound. Their vocals range from the hauntingly melodic, to the edgy and gritty, to angry and malevolent screams with a subtle flavour emanating from Carnatic roots. Aaron’s drumming style brings in a new dimension of early thrash metal and modern progressive techniques. All these elements coming together make for exciting possibilities in the bands future endeavours.

Edmonton, Canada. May of MMXI. During a particularly horrendous spring thaw, IDES of WINTER emerged from the smoldering embers of several local metal bands that were not quite ready for entertainment careers. A new collaboration was formed with dedicated members each harboring the drive to write, record, and play the shit out of every single live performance. Although together for only a short while, IDES of WINTER went straight to work melding styles as well as writing songs which clicked right away. So why assume a name meaning "the middle of winter"? All artists must draw inspiration from their surroundings. Northern Canadian winters dominate the senses. With a flourish of winter wildlife and wind-chills that can freeze you to the bone in minutes, the stage was definitely set. Armed with experience and a common goal, IDES of WINTER are prepared to meet any condition thrown at them, and eager to entertain the frost bitten hordes.
