12:30 p.m. Words on Words Workshop with

Ben Rogers & the Bloodred Yonder (host), Scott Nolan, Sam Tudor
 1:30 p.m. Eliza Mary Doyle (bluegrass/folk) http://www.elizamarydoyle.com/
When Eliza Doyle’s car broke down in Nashville in 2015, she found herself happily stuck in Music City.  The venerable Saskatchewan banjo player and singer/songwriter had stopped in to see a festival and ended up enjoying an extended stay, playing in bars and meeting all manner of talented musicians.  Having been on sabbatical to follow her muse anyway, it seemed like fate urging her to keep on the well-worn path to musical fulfillment.
Doyle has had a fifteen-year career in groups, as a solo artist, and as a professional session musician, playing banjo, singing, and even performing with instruments like dobro or mandolin.  She has released nine full-length albums, won numerous awards, and toured North America and Europe.  Doyle has been a regional finalist in CBC’s Searchlight Canada competition and past winner of Bell Media’s contest, The Next Big Thing.
Whether creating a driving rhythm to hold a track together or shucking and plucking some leads to jump to the front of a song, Doyle has the versatility to go from beautiful and melodious songs to a full blast bootstompin’ hoe down.  Her strong, but wonderfully frayed voice belts out captivating tunes and harmonies.  Everything about Eliza Doyle’s music rings of an authenticity that takes you straight to the beating heart of folk and bluegrass music.

3:15: Scott Nolan (Folk/ Rock) http://www.scottnolan.ca/
WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Canada – Scott Nolan’s lateset release by independant label, Baldwin County Public Records, crafts personal narratives with an artist's eye (“You Leave Alone”) and a poet's elegance (“Forever Is a Long Time”). Evidence: Silverhill. The seamless new collection spotlights a rapidly rising songwriter growing exponentially with each track (“Fire Up”). Real life experience maps the landscape. “I spend most of my time thinking about words, music and language,” Nolan explains. “I found myself writing short poems based on people and places in my neighbourhood, trying to capture a bit of what was happening around me.” Nolan frequently delivers keen insight with an everyman's grace. “Tree branches like broken bones, barbed wire and telephone polls/Texas heat, highway tolls/honkytonk silver with bullet holes,” he sings on “Curls and Curves.” “Quality time, you and me/chicken shack, Chinaberry tree/Arkansas girl with sass and verve/loves' a crazy game, sometimes you get what you deserve.” The human condition fully framed in a single stanza. Lyrically, Nolan was ready to put these words to music. All that was left was to drive 1700 miles south to Loxley, Alabama (Admiral Bean Studio), eight miles north of the town Silverhill, and meet up with Americana sweethearts, Willie Sugarcapps, made up of Will Kimbrough (Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell), Sugarcane Jane otherwise known by Anthony Crawford (Neil Young, Dwight Yoakam, Steve Winwood) and Savana Lee, Grayson Capps and Corky Hughes to record what ended up being Nolan’s most proud work to date. “I had stumbled upon the location by playing a venue (The Frog Pond) in Silverhill, Alabama while touring with Mary Gauthier. I was also aware of Willie Sugarcapps debut album and thrilled to find most of them there that day. Anthony Crawford put his heart and soul into the production of this album and Willie Sugarcapps brought it to life”, says Nolan. “Scott's a brilliant songwriter, an amazing player and a damn good co-writer,” says Americana icon Gauthier, who has co-written and toured extensively with Nolan. “I recommend giving this new work a listen. I'm proud to have a co-write on it.” Legendary instrumentalist Gurf Morlix echoes: “He can pull a really good song out of a vein the rest of us missed.” “Scott's one of my favorite songwriters,” Carll says. Legendary Willie Nelson harmonica player Mickey Raphael doubles down: “This is one record I wished I played on.” Nolan, a singular songwriter, poet and multi-instrumentalist, has had his songs recorded by A-list Americana all-stars including Hayes Carll, Mary Gauthier, Watermelon Slim and Corin Raymond. Additionally, he has recently produced albums for William Prince, Lynne Hanson and Watermelon.

1 p.m.: Chicken Like Birds (Folk)  https://www.chickenlikebirds.com/

“ A funny, unique, truly memorable folk-country duo”. That’s what the Permanent Rain Press had to say about Chicken-Like Birds after listening to their new EP “Moving On” that was released in March, 2017. The two have been making great strides with their original swing, country blues and ragtime tunes that are applicable to the 20th century but are very much influenced by the music of the 1920’s and 1930’s. Appearing at festivals across Western Canada last year, 2017 finds the duo on their first cross Canada tour, going all the way to St. John’s Newfoundland.

Long Version

The love for original music is the reason why the two Chicken-Like Birds met.  Ari and Jasmin had both been going to a particular open mic on Tuesdays at Cafe Koi in Calgary, one that focused on original music and also gave you a free beer for playing.  They knew of each other and had even gone out for beers with a gang of the open mic’-ers at one point.  But it wasn’t until Ari went up on stage, sang a song about killing his girlfriend, then announced he just got back from learning to build guitars, and had grown a bit of a beard, that Jasmin thought to befriend him.
Soon they became drinking buddies.  Then song-writing buddies.  That’s when Jasmin told Ari that in a few weeks she was going tree planting for three months and then afterward she was going to move to Vancouver.  She asked him if he wanted to come with her to Vancouver and even though he only knew her for a few months, he agreed.
While Jasmin laboured in the cut blocks of BC and AB, Ari prepared to leave his office job of 6 years, let go of his rented house and sold all his stuff or gave it away.  He had also promised to build an entire guitar for his friend, the first one he would have made since learning to do it in Tugaske, Saskatchewan. Ari is very persistent when given a task so he indeed got it all done and once Jasmin’s planting season ended they started the journey off by being houseless for a while.

2:05: let's Duet workshop with

Mayor Washboard Hank, Mountain Muriel, Maureen Chambers (host), Mark Sadlier Brown, Bev Bruce

3:20 p.m. Mariel Buckley (Country)  https://marielbuckley.bandcamp.com/

 Folk / Roots / Alt-Country / Outlaw Country

"Buckley's clear vocals shine with honesty and a touch of darkness, establishing her as an original and confident voice on the alt-country scene." - Anna Alger, Exclaim!
The haunting, alt-country melodies of Mariel Buckley are not easily forgotten among the polished, typical tunes of modern country music. Amidst the sea of neon-Nashville superstars, Buckley offers a crunchy, roots alternative.
Fresh from her 2015 Calgary Folk Music Festival debut; Buckley is in the early stages of planning her second full-length album. The disc will be a follow up to the celebrated ‘Motorhome’, which garnered praises nation wide from CBC, CKUA, CJSW, and CJSR; as well as the ever reputable ‘No Depression’ Magazine. She's been referred to as "...the next Loretta Lynn..." with "...hints of Bruce Springsteen and Patsy Cline all rolled into one."
Although the comparative musical shoes to fill are quite sizeable, Buckley brings a magnetic stage presence to every show; pushing her abilities above and beyond to earn her slot in the Canadian Roots scene.
