Edmonton singer/songwriter Jessica Heine (hi-na) is making a name for herself with her engaging onstage personality, eclectic, meaningful songwriting, and an incredible voice!  Heine’s love of storytelling is very apparent on her new CD, Songteller Storywriter, released in June 13 of 2009.  She thrills in travelling the world, learning people’s stories and sharing them musically with audiences.

In her own words:

Born and raised in Alberta, I spent the first three years of my life in Pincher Creek, Alberta, before moving to Edson (sandwiched halfway between Edmonton and Jasper National Park). I wrote my first song at age three ,“Bringing the Glorias,” which anyone who listens too closely will note, is a blatant knockoff of the Church Hymn “In Thee is Gladness” (real credit to Giovanni Gastoldi who wrote the tune in 1593).

Through the years I moved away from borrowing hymn tunes and started writing my own music.  At age 11, some girlfriends and I started a band called—in this Order—Nasty Girls, Combination Creation, Creation Combination and finally Code L.U.V., before it dissolved when half the girls in the band moved the year I was going into grade 6.  Our big hit, “All I Do Is Think About You” never saw the light of a studio.

To recover from the dissolution of Code L.U.V. I felt it necessary to take a three-year hiatus in Junior High,  By grade nine, I was inspired to write again and began composing songs on the piano.  I started dreaming of a future opening for Sarah McLachlan and began performing often in Edson for fundraising concerts by myself and with my family (The Heine Family Singers—think von Trapp Family but a cappella, three kids instead of seven, oh, and my mom was never a singing nanny).

After High School, I moved to Edmonton where I studied music at the University of Alberta.  I was quickly introduced to Edmonton’s thriving music scene and soon was (like a modern day superhero, but without any cool superpowers) studying Classical vocal technique by day and visiting open stages at coffee shops by night.  It was there that I met many of Edmonton’s wonderful performers and was exposed to all kinds of new music.

Five years later, I graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Classical Vocal Performance, got married and tried to figure out what was next.  Over the course of that year, I wrote some new songs that I was proud of and decided to independently record and release a CD. Either Way was primarily recorded the summer of 2005 at Ragged But Right Studios in Edmonton.  Co-Produced by Terry Nadasdi (Bix Mix Boys, House Kats), it was an amalgamation of songs I’d written when I was as young as 16 and some songs that were practically brand new when the recording started.

In the fall of 2005, my husband and I left to volunteer with a Non-Governmental Organization in El Salvador.  The CD wasn’t quite done when I left, and some of the last instruments were added in my absence.  I listened to new takes at Internet cafes in Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, emailing any thoughts or concerns back to Canada.  We came back to Canada in May of 2006, after a life changing six and a half months, and I released the CD in the fall of 2006.

The past few years (2006-present) have mostly been me finding my way in the folk music community.  This has involved some songwriting competitions (I was a finalist in the Best Song Category for the Calgary Folk Festival Songwriting Competition in both 2007 and 2008 and a finalist at the prestigious New Folk Song Writing Competition in Kerrville Texas the spring of 2007), playing festivals (including Edmonton Folk Festival in 2007 and Mecicine Hat’s Tongue on the Post Festival 2009).

Blending touches of soul and folk mixed with a pop groove, listeners across Canada are tuning in to what Tim Smith has to offer. After a successful start in music as a string musician, Tim turned his attention to the world of ‘singer/songwriter.’ Picking up a guitar in his late teens, Tim got to work, dreaming of one day becoming a familiar face in the music industry.

Hard work really does pay off. After more than six years of writing and performing, a tangible compilation of creativity is born. Through the generous backing of Rawlco Radio, and the overwhelming support of Bill Bell (producer), band members, friends, and family, Tim Smith is now celebrating a milestone in his recording career - his debut album.

'Between Buildings' is a dynamic labour of love. It is a record with a fresh mix of sounds and ideas - some born by intuition, others wrapped in surprise. The album is textured with layers of percussive and ethnic instrumentation. Tim is proud to showcase his musical foundations; growing up on the violin, he is able to include a variety of improvised string arrangements providing a unique sound. The addition of french horn and cello are a tribute to his classical background now mixed with modern tonalities.

Tim will be touring Western Canada this fall with accompanying artist, Sarah Cole.

If you had told Sarah Cole a year ago that by the end of 2009 she would have completed a demo project, a full album, and toured Western Canada a few times, she probably wouldn’t have believed you. But Sarah didn’t know how recording a few songs in her home might change things. This October, Sarah is proud to release her debut record.

Produced by Tim Smith and Matt Grier, and recorded in three different cities – Edmonton, Okotoks, and Kelowna – Sarah’s debut album, “Waiting for Next Year” is a dynamic album of storytelling that encourages the listener to aspire to personal growth and positive change in their life. Each song that Sarah writes tells a story – whether it be serious or just for fun. Topics range from her grandfather’s recent passing to having a bad day at work, and going crazy with her credit card.

The title track, “Next Year”, sums up the theme of the album: change. Sarah comments, “A lot of people have a lot of things they want to do before they die, but they don’t end up doing them. There’s always an excuse not to change or try something new – whether it be a job, security, family, or fear. We always push things off and say, ‘Next year, I’ll…’ There should be no next year. The only guarantee we have is right now.”

Sarah Cole is touring across Western Canada with Tim (who is also a singer/songwriter) throughout the fall and into the winter. They will then be traveling and touring around Europe this spring.
