And we’re more diverse,” Smith said, whose band, which combines everything from jazz, reggae, funk and punk,  will be playing this coming Friday at the Bigwood music festival, which will be taking place at the end of the Research Station Road featuring several acts including the Skilletlikkers, Treeline, The Phantom Creeps and the Dirti Speshuls plus Randy Shaver. Phantom Creeps debut new CD

E-mail Print PDF

Though they have been together for less than a year, Lethbridge psychobilly trio the Phantom Creeps have come a long way. They have done 30 shows all over western Canada but most notably, the Phantom Creeps introduced their new CD to henotic,Aug. 25. Photo by Richard Amerydrummer  Dean Wilson is excited about the Phantom Creeps’ new self titled CD.

“It’s a mixture of  rockabilly, psychobilly and punk,” Wilson said of the 11 track CD which is all original material except a cover of  “Bright Side” from  a little known American band called Those Poor Bastards.

“Tyler (Brownfield, stand up bassist/singer)  and I just finished the tracking in our top secret  practice facility and took it down to Crossroads Studio for mastering,” Wilson said adding they welcomed new guitarist, Jon Vornbrock who plays with local alternative rock act, the Void, shortly after the recording was completed as they parted ways with their original guitarist, Evan Herbst, who plays on the CD.
“We knew Jon through friends from the Void and Atrophy Manuscript and wanted to play with him. So it just took one phone call and we had a guitar player,” Wilson said adding the band is pleased with the CD.

Hardtails set the night on fire at Henotic

E-mail Print PDF

The Hardtails set the night on fire. Photo by Richard AmeryIt is ironic when a fire hall gets set on fire almost literally as it did Friday,  Aug. 28 thanks to an incendiary show at Henotic with the Phantom Creeps and Calgary rockabilly trio the Hardtails on the main level, as well as  a farewell party for Jeremy Floyd Cowpar with the Void and Smoke Stack Jacks upstairs in the GCBC  Lounge.
I was jumping between gigs upstairs, downstairs and across town at the Slice for Twilight Hotel and Scott Nolan, as per usual, but had almost perfect timing as I caught most of Scott Nolan’s  set of rough edged acoustic blues, coupled with harmonica and a little help from his friends in Twilight Hotel — Dave Quanbury and Brandy Zdan who lent their voices and slide guitar to the last couple songs of his set. Nolan returned the favour later on, lending his hand on drums  during  Twilight Hotel’s set along with Tyler Bird who contributed some stand up bass.

Hot Sunday at Henotic

E-mail Print PDF
One of the hottest and possibly the loudest shows of the year happened Sunday, Aug. 23 in the GCBC Lounge.
Vancouver’s Peace, a late addition to a hot bill featuring the Hot Blood Bombers and Hot Live Guys as well as the Myelin Sheaths began with an aural assault of thunderous drumming and cool basslines.
Then, the aptly named Hot Live Guys tore it up as expected, deafening the audience in the process with a tight set which because of the volume  made one song difficult to distinguish from each other. But there was solid musicianship beneath layers of shrieking feedback which recalled the likes of everyone from C’mon to Led Zeppelin with a touch of the Smalls and Black Sabbath.  The Winnipeg  foursome made a  kinetic connection with the crowd bouncing along with them. The lead guitarist writhed and rolled all over the floor while the singer howled into the mic fighting with a constantly breaking guitar strap.  Note to self— next time The Hot Live Guys play— bring a good pair of earplugs.
The Hot Blood Bombers were next, keeping the spirit of garage rock and roll alive. The Regina power trio displayed some impressive bassmanship, a lot of energy, volume and a classic rock sound reminiscent of Blue Cheer and the MC5  with a touch of Motorhead and a lot of  the New York Dolls.

Good music for a great cause —helping the youth

E-mail Print PDF
The only thing better than live music is live music raising money for a good cause.
Local bands Dave McCann and the Firehearts and the Skilletlikkers  raised  at least $1,500 for  Wood’s Home, which helps troubled youth in Lethbridge. That and a bachelor auction, helped bring in at least 50 people to the Slice, Aug. 22 for some great music for a great cause.Kara Fitzsimmons sings with the Skilletlikkers.
“I knew that auctioning off  extremely good-looking money would  bring in lots of money,” laughed event organizer Kara Fitsimmons,  who was among the three up for  bids . She was pleased with the event, though it didn’t raise close to $7,000  like her last fund-raiser did for breast cancer.
“Considering it’s the last day of Whoop-Up Days, I’m happy with  the turnout here,” she said adding while this event came together at the last minute, she felt it was time to raise money for a good cause.
“I kind of feel the youth are our future . Our troubled youth need help so they can be contributing members of the community,” she said of choosing Woods Homes. Having Dave McCann play was a big selling point.
“I didn’t want to  go through the year without doing a fundraiser  and Dave McCann said he was able to do one in August,” she said.
“I knew he’d bring out a lot of people.”
