Devon Coyote and Twenty Centuries of Stony Sleep a study in contrasts

E-mail Print PDF

The Slice was hopping, Sept. 7, to the sounds of Kelowna’s Devon Coyote and his band and for somewhat of a contrast, Calgary rock band Twenty Centuries of Twenty Centuries of Stony Sleep rock the Slice. Photo by Richard AmeryStony Sleep.
Devon Coyote was up first , playing a couple solo songs, broke a string on his acoustic guitar, then picked up the electric, turned it up and didn’t look back as he asked his band to join him on stage.

The band, including Broken Down Suitcase drummer, Ben Caldwell played a more roots rock set with  touches of Sam Roberts and a smattering of Oasis. They went psychedelic with a cool cover of Neil Young’s epic “Cortez The Killer.”

Another highlight was “Paint This Red Door Black,” on which he played some hot slide guitar, which reminded me of the Mason Rack band.

He switched back to the electric, broke a string on that then finished an incendiary set playing slide guitar.

Calgary’s “Twenty Centuries of Story Sleep,” provided a complete counterpoint to that for their set.

Alexi Davis, dressed in a powder blues ’70s style suit was the consummate frontman, promising songs about going crazy and losing your mind. He stepped back as one of the other guitarists sang lead on a couple numbers.

Their set was loud, noisy, distorted, combining elements of Modest Mouse with the Pixies, yet still showcased some stellar riffs, some pop hooks and a lot of different textures from the three guitarists and some groovy bass lines.
