Blame a good time on blues music with Düus, King and Doerksen

It is a pretty lethal combination when Papa King, Darryl Düus and Leigh Doerksen play the blues together on stage, especially when backed by Tyler Bird on drums.Papa King sings the blues. Photo by Richard Amery

The Lethbridge musicians played an energetic set of blues  and blues influenced music at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Feb. 2 for a full house.

Papa King and Daryll Düus took turns singing lead vocals, as Leigh Doerksen laid back on bass, holding the groove together, though he gave his bass to Tyler Bird  took over lead guitar while Papa King played drums to  end the set with a song called “Blame it on the Blues.”

Papa King mostly played acoustic guitar, leaving Düus to play subdued solos, though he cut loose later in the set. King would add the odd solo on acoustic guitar as well. Both of them had very complementary gravelly voices, though King’s was more laid back and reminiscent of Dr. John. Düus, as always belted out the blues as if possessed by the tortured spirit of Howlin’ Wolf.

They played some original music and Düus belted out blues classics like “Over Yonder Wall” and Elmore James’  “Talk To Me Baby.”
