Lethbridge based country/ rock singer songwriter Dave McCann and his band, the Firehearts played a home town show at the Slice, April 12 for an enthusiastic audience.
His three sets include songs from throughout his career, beginning with the earlier songs like Tinseltown and Road To Cain among others.
He had his entire band, which really made things cook. One of my favourites “ Fireheart,” off of his most recent CD “Dixiebluebird” attracted quite a few two-steppers to the front of the stage.
Lead guitarist Dave Bauer switched to mandolin for a couple of songs including a slower, new, countryish song.
But when McCann plugged in, he sounded like a mix of Cross Canadian Ragweed, and alt country bands like Son Volt and Wilco.
They ended their first set with an older, mandolin powered song,“Waiting for the Threshold.”
He was in full electric mode by the time he played his third set of upbeat country rock, but went acoustic again for “Grain Cars.”
He ended his set with the always popular “Leeroy Quit Drinking” and knelt down on the stage, twiddling effects pedals to create psychedelic sheets of noise to end his show.
He was called back for an encore of an excellent version of “Ring of Fire, which split the difference between Johnny Cash’s original and Social Distortion’s revved up cover.
