Boogie Patrol get a little more funky

E-mail Print PDF

Things got a little funky late into the night as Edmonton blues/ boogie and now funk band  the Boogie Patrol revisited the Slice, Oct. 24.

I missed their first set and had to wait for a very long set break before the hot band returned  to the stage.

The band ( "Rott'n" Dan - Harmonica & Lead Vocals Yuji Ihara - Guitar & Backing Vocals Nigel Gale - Bass & Backing Vocals Emmet VanEtten - Drums & Backing Vocals)  began their last set of the night with an extended funky jam on a couple of James Brown songs which had quite a few of the audience dancing and singing along.

The fun continued as they debuted several new , funk fuelled songs like  “ Too Late” and “ Hard to Tell.”

The dancing and singing along,  which was a little surprising as the catchy songs were new to most of the crowd, but had plenty of addictive melodies.

Frontman/ harpmeister Rotten Dan Shinnan’s voice oozed soul and bluesy passion.

Guitarist Yuji Ihara sat back for the most part and laid down the funk while bassist Nigel Gale was at the forefront with plenty of funky playing and a touch of slapping and popping.

New drummer Emmett Van Etten fit right in and slapped and caressed the traps with toe tapping rhythm.

Everyone showed off their chops on the show stopping  funky reworking of their cover of the Beatles‘ “Come Together”, which  sounded like brand new song — nothing like the original or the Boogie Patrol’s already original arrangement.
