There is always something going down in this town. There is an excellent variety of shows this week from an early shot of Christmas cheer courtesy of the The Nutcracker to psychobilly with Montreal psychobilly band The Brains.
Wednesday is a violent contrast in itself, with the Brains returning to Lethbridge to rock Inferno with Lethbridge metal band Penitentz and Gender Bender plus Calgary punks the Motherfuckers. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 students and $15 at the door.
For something a little softer, The Slice brings back Keswick, Ontario power pop band the Elwins. There is a $5 cover for that.
The Geomatic Attic features Celtic music with Sean McCann of the Great Big Sea. The show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $22.50.
And the Slocan Ramblers, who have also played the Geomatic Attic, will be bringing bluegrass music to the Owl Acoustic Lounge. And that’s just on Wednesday.
Thursday, Nov. 19 is surprisingly busy with two big shows.
The Slice welcomes Winnipeg pop band Chic Gamine, who were in Lethbridge opening for Lindi Ortega at the Geomatic Attic a few months ago. While the Owl Acoustic Lounge features a rare Thursday night show with deathgrass band Murder Murder.
As usual Friday is a big night for live music with several big shows happening downtown.
The Slice brings in Vancouver electro pop duo Rococode, touring in support of their new EP “Panic Attack.
The Owl Acoustic Lounge also features B.C.talent with Victoria indie-rock band Towers and Trees who also have a new CD to support.
Hopefully those shows won’t suffer attendance-wise because the always popular Edmonton horn powered rock band the Wet Secrets return to Lethbridge to play Studio 54 the same night with local country band the Dearly Departed. Tickets are $15 in advance.
Folkies and South Country Fair fans will have a great night on the town as well as former South Country Fair mayor Linda McRae returns to Lethbridge to play for the Lethbridge Folk Club at the Cave, the Lethbridge College student's lounge). McRae is touring in support of her brand new Folsom Prison and more rock influenced CD “Shadow Trails.” The show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 for Folk Club members and $20 for invited guests, which includes a membership for the year.
There is also a big rap show, Nov. 20 at Inferno with Swollen Members’ Prevail and Neph aka Alpha Omega. There will be plenty of local talent supporting them on stage including Sam MacKey and Pyke. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.
And even though it is only mid November, it is also the Christmas season — apparently.
So get in the spirit with not one, but two different productions of Christmas classic the Nutcracker.
If you missed The Moscow Ballet production of the Nutcracker to the Enmax Centre at the Enmax Centre Nov. 16, then get your Nutcracker fix with several productions of Calgary based ballet company Jeunesse Classique Ballet Company which brings their production of the Nutcracker to the Yates Centre, Nov. 20-22. It features some Lethbridge dancers as well. Showtime is 7:30 each night plus 2:30 p.m. matinees on Nov. 21 and 22. Tickets are $35 adults, $25 for 17 and under as well as seniors.
Both the Owl and Slice rock on Nov. 21. The Owl features excellent indie rock with the Ashley Hundred and The Provincial Archive, while the Slice has a show for classic metal-heads with local rockers Unzipped.
There is a cornucopia of other great show as well including open mics and Mwansa Mwansa bringing a whole lot of soul to Casino Lethbridge Friday and Saturday Night.
Elvis fans will want to be at the Yates Theatre, Nov 23 for Tribute to Elvis 56. Tickets are only $44.95. The show begins at 7:30 p.m.. It is one of several big Monday night shows which also includes Sean Burns at the Slice and Irish troubadour Andy White visiting the Owl Acoustic Lounge in support of his new CD. “How I Feel.”
Last , but definitely not least, Vancouver based folk/ pop star Dan Mangan plays an intimate solo show at the Southminster United Church, Nov. 24 for the Geomatic Attic in support of his new CD “Club Meds.” Tickets are $35 The show begins at 8 p.m.
