The first day of Ribfest and the Tour of Alberta took over Galt Gardens, Thursday, Sept. 1.

Cyclists in the Tour of Alberta. Photo by Richard AmeryThere was a decent turMwansa Mwansa playing the Tour of Alberta. Photo by Richarrd Amerynout considering most of the roads were blocked off for some of the world’s best cyclists to compete. And a great slate of talented local musicians performed throughout the day including Shaela Miller band , the Lethbridge Community Taiko Association, Diversified, Alyssa McQuaid, Groove Apostles and  Red River Jigging

I, like a lot of people had to stop by after work, so I only caught a few acts.

Ryland Moranz and a talented band of upright bassist Tyson Maiko, lead guitarist Matthew Robinson and drummer Brad Brouwer played a tight set of heartfelt Moranz originals. They ended their set with a laid back, rootsy version of the Clash’s “Guns of Brixton.”

After Moranz, Burning Bridges aka Steve Foord and fiddle player Megan Brown played an eclectic set of original dark country/ roots music about zombies, internet relationships and the Necessities “Goat Song (Tin Can Soup).”

They performed their usual strong , soulful set of pop, R and B and soul music including a Beyonce song, powered by Mwansa Mwansa’s smooth, sultry voice.Ryland Moranz and Tyson Maiko at the Tour of Alberta. Photo by Richard Amery
