It’s been a while since I’ve seen Edmonton musician Billie Zizi, so I was glad to catch her return to Lethbridge to play the Owl Acoustic Lounge, opening for Makiisma, Friday April 22. She was last here in 2019 and at South Country Fair in 2016 and I remember being really impressed by her guitar picking.
Now, a more mature, introspective Zizi has settled into a comfortable indie folk singer songwriter niche.
Zizi and her trio ( drummer Bramwell Park and bassist Lindsay Woolgar) played an array of original indie rock/ folk flavoured songs, punctuated by perky guitar solos and fantastic background vocals from bassist Woolgar.
“ I watch the Sun Come Up” was one of many mellow, groovy highlights.
They added some blues in a few places and a whole lot of pop hooks in others.
they finished strong with “Don’t Make Me Wait.”
Makiisma were up next. As usual Megan Brown sang spooky goth folk, dark country music.
Brown played the first couple of songs on violin then switched to guitar.
They mostly focused on their CD “Lady Misery,” including the title track and “No Roses,” but also added a few new songs. A new one about rabbits was a highlight. She also added a cover of Jewel’s “Who Will Save your Soul.”
TJ Waltho added keyboards and played the Owl Acoustic Lounge’s piano.
