Ray Bonneville plays laid back blues folk

The show I was looking forward to the most was Ray Bonneville at the Wolf’s Den, Oct. 9.

But first I was impressed by Little Birdie, aka Orit Shimoni , who played a pleasing set of upbeat country/ folk along the lines of Patsy Cline.

She told stories in her songs including one based on the Bible story of Abraham killing his son to prove his faith to God, which she wrote from the mother’s perspective, and areally convincing Little Birdie opened with a strong set, Oct. 9. Photo by Richard Amerystory about being a “Farmer’s Daughter.”

“ My parents always call me on that,” she said after her set, noting her father is a biologist. The former teacher was on her way to Calgary to spend Thanksgiving with her parents after her show, but she basically lives on the road having lived all over the place including Jerusalem, Montreal and Berlin.

She ended her set with “Left the City Burning,” which Ray Bonneville opened his first set by noting he loved.

Bonneville played a strong set of soft fingerpicking, smooth rhythm and harmonica solos, in  addition to a lot of stories and a few jokes.

He  had a good sized crowd captivated by his tremolo-tinged Colin Linden style guitar,  tapping their feet and their tables in time with him.

He spoke about living in Austin, and joked it is an oasis of artists and musicians in the middle of Texas.

Then he spoke about living on St. Denis street in Montreal where he was inspired to write an older  song (off of his 2000 CD  Rough Luck” called “ Wild Thing For You.”

He ended his first set by retuning his guitar and playing some slow slide blues including an exceptional song, “Tiptoe Spider”  from his 2003 CD “Roll It Down.”
