The New Arch Riders with Stewart MacDougall plus John Wort Hannam, Tracy Millar and Tracy Oscar and Special guest Amos Garrett will be playing all of your favourite Ian Tyson hits

Ian Tyson’s songbook and contributions to the country, folk-roots, country-rock, and cowboy culture music scenes have been nothing short of astounding during his six decades as a composer and performer.

As a bandleader Tyson sits with the late Ronnie Hawkins as one of the two great mentors in contemporary roots music history in this country.

However, with 17 solo albums to his credit between 1973 and 2015, following the great run Ian & Sylvia enjoyed as folk and country-rock pioneers in the sixties and seventies, Tyson has left us with a book of songs that stands alongside those of the best. It is a book that is alive and well in the hands of the performers who drive the Tyson Tribute show…….The Gift.

Named for the song the long-time resident of Longview wrote about acclaimed western painter Charles M. Russell, The Gift began as a one-off project in early 2001. Broadcaster and producer Peter North and Tyson sideman and song-writing collaborator Stewart MacDougall decided a show honoring the master was in order.

The initial shows in Edmonton and St. Albert were so well received that festivals and theatres began requesting the show.

Twenty years, one star studded tribute album, and dozens and dozens of appearances later, The Gift has become an acclaimed show that covers Tyson’s career in a manner that had never been seen and heard before.

“Truly a gift for Ian Tyson fans, an overdue tribute to a living legend.”

Pianist-vocalist MacDougall leads the New Chinook Arch Riders, which features five former members of Tyson’s ensembles. Three additional singers in John Wort Hannam, popular rodeo circuit singer Tracy Millar and former One Horse Blue vocalist Ian Oscar, are also members of the ensemble. With this confident and talented cast The Gift alternately cruises and darts like a championship cutting horse across Tyson’s vast catalogue.

Ace fiddler Myran Szott, guitarist Gordie Matthews, drummer Thom Moon, the bass playing Julian Kerr and MacDougall have an expertise in playing Tyson’s unique music and their experience from collective decades of playing with Tyson is obvious as soon as the first notes in the show are played and sung.

The cohesiveness and passion of these musicians will once again be apparent on the evening of Friday September 23, 2022 when the cast of The Gift perform at Southminster United Church in Lethbridge.

“A must-see for fans of Ian Tyson’s Songbook”

Allison Brock, host of CKUA Radio Network’s Wide Cut Country.

For this show, the Lethbridge audience will also see guitar great Amos Garrett in the special guest chair. Garrett came to international prominence as Ian & Sylvia’s bandleader in the Great Speckled Bird. His contribution of Some Kind of Fool to the 2008 recording project of The Gift, , was a standout alongside pieces by Corb Lund, Jennifer Warnes, Gordon Lightfoot, Chris Hillman, The McDades, MacDougall, Blue Rodeo and Tom Russell.

From hits like Someday Soon, Summer Wages, Springtime in Alberta, Navajo Rug and Four Strong Winds to cowboy culture classics such as La Primera, Saddle Bronc Girl, Horsethief Moon,  M.C. Horses, and Cowboy Pride, The Gift is an entertaining, artistic gem.

"Ian’s legacy goes beyond being a great singer and songwriter; over the course of his career he created his own ever evolving genre. The Chinook Arch Riders and The Gords were privileged to be involved in his creative process. We are honoured to continue the tradition,” says MacDougall.

This is a long overdue swing into southern Alberta for The Gift and tickets are available online at
