Toronto synth pop band Dragonette brought the party to the shadows of Average Joes, Aug. 6.

 A sold out  crowd jumped in time with lead singer Martina Sorbara the odd time the lights actually shone on her.

The roving strobe lights flashing over the audience had me looking for Skynet’s Terminator drones. It baffled me why the lights weren’t highlighting the band. Why wouldn’t you want to show off an attractive lead singer?

Sorbara danced like her life depended on it and grinned ear to ear as  waves of synths, bass and drums crashed over the screaming crowd who were enjoying themselves to the fullest extent.  Dragonette brought the spirit of the ’80s  to 2013 as she sang a few bars of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to have Fun.” early in the set.

Their best known hits “Living In This City,” and “Hello” came early on in the set and had the crowd singing along and bouncing in time to the music.

 The lights came up for a slightly slower ballad called “Unforgettable” which featured her on a self proclaimed “keyboard solo,” though Dan Kurtz and Joel Stouffer held down most of the musical end of things. One of the roadies hid in the shadows supplying extra guitar early in the show.

 They ended the show just after 11 p.m. with an encore of  song I think was called “Best of Years.”
