Lethbridge’s favourite dance band Hippodrome was back at the Slice, for their annual Boxing Day show, though barely any of the close to sold out crowd actually wanted to “Dance to the Music,” like the song said.
The crowd as always was digging the 11 piece orchestra’s set of R and B, funk and disco music and eventually warmed up enough to dance.
They opened their set with “Dance To the Music” which allowed each band member including the horn section, to solo.
Shawna Romolliwa and Juran Green shared lead vocals on the first set as Erica Hunt rushed over from the Yates Centre from the another successful performance with New West Theatre’s “Jubilee” joined them near the end of the first set to add that little bit of extra ooph and vocal power.
In the meantime, the hot Hippodrome tore through a variety of covers including an excellent version of “Stand
ing on Shakey Ground” and dabbled in disco for “Car Wash.”
Greene sang a soulful “Soul Man” and donned a dreadlocks wig and Rastafarian hat for a Bob Marley’s reggae classic “ I Shot the Sheriff,” as Hunt got ready to join them.
They brought up vocalist Andrea Romolliwa who last performed with the band six years ago to sing with her sister on “Mustang Sally.”
They wound up the set by letting James Oldenburg show off his guitar chops on Santana’s “Oyo Como Va,” before taking a set break.
