Jenny Allen returns with old and new songs

It is always a pleasure to see songwriter  Jenny Allen back in Lethbridge, especially when she has a solid rhythm section of Pete Loughlin on bass and lead guitarist Mel Smith supporting her.Jenny Allen and Pete Loughlin. Photo by Richard Amery
She had a decent sized crowd, for the most part listening intently as she played solo material, several new songs and  a handful of songs from her folk rock trio the Fates.

She sang mostly up tempo uplifting and optimistic,  folk rock, but added a touch of jazz as Mel Smith added subtle slide guitar solos.

There were also darker, more thought provoking moments plus a few well chosen covers by the likes of Janis Ian and Lucinda Williams.
“ My Big Mouth” was a highlight as was a fantastic version of the Fates’ “ Could Have Been Something”  and “So Sorry,” which ended her show.

Pete Loughlin was quick with a joke. As were the audience, as one audience  member had some fun with innuendos on a drink coaster and asked Loughlin to tape it to him self. He compromised by pasting it on his bass.
