East Vancouver based folk/ rock band Good for Grapes used much of their PEAK performance winnings last year to record their new CD “The Ropes” with producer Howard Redekopp.
Good For Grapes return to the Slice, Nov. 4.
“He’s someone I’ve always admired and now he’s our best friend which happens when you’re in the studio together,” said guitarist/ vocalist Dan McBurnie, who make up Good For Grapes with Graham Gomez - Guitar/Vocals ; Alexa Unwin - Piano/Vocals; Robert Hardie - Bass/Vocals; Alex Hauka - Cello and percussionist.
He noted winning the B.C. Peak Performance competition last year went a long way to recording the CD.
“We had enough money to record the CD and we still have money left for videos and touring,” he said.
“We worked really hard. Our goal as to make it into the Top 3 and we still would have got $50,000. Winning it was unbelievable,” he said.
They are really pleased with the new CD “the Ropes.”
It was nice. We didn’t have to worry about money or time,” he said.
“We feel it’s a little more rock and roll. There are different arrangements and we have four vocalists so there's lots of vocal harmonies,” he said adding the the songs are written from the perspective of a variety of people who are learning how to live.
“It’s about people starting out and learning the ropes,” he said.
The first video was filmed in Las Vegas, though the band themselves didn’t go there to finish it.
“ We sent a crew down there to get some cool aerial shots, then we rented a space here for performance shots,” he said.Good For Grapes last played Lethbridge with The Wet Secrets last year.
“That was really exciting,” he said.
“This show is going to be totally new material. Everyone is really excited to play the new songs and just to get back to playing live again. We’ve got a lot of pent up energy,” he said.
Good For Grapes play the Slice at 9 p.m. There is an eight dollar cover charge.
