Regina punk band  the Royal Red Brigade return to Lethbridge, Aug. 7 at the Moose hall with fellow Regina oi punk band  Bats Out! and Victoria anarchist black metal and thrash metal band Iskra.

“The last time we were there it was with the Ripcordz. and it was great to see them  playing again. It’s just nice to see a band I grew up listening to still kicking,” said Royal Red Brigade guitarist vocalist Jason Thiry, who will be joined as always by band mates guitarist/ vocalist Dylan Ludwig, bassist Jessie Ethier and drummer Mitch Rogers.
Since forming and recording  their debut CD in 2009, they have opened for a lot of classic punk bands including D.O.A. and SNFU.

“ But probably was  getting to open for Bad Religion in Saskatoon. We don’t usually get to play bigger venues so we’ve got a taste for it now,” he said.
Their last CD,“Seasides,” included a punk-waltz cover of Screaming Jay Hawkins’ “ I Put a Spell on You.”

“Screaming Jay Hawkins is a maniac . We had a great idea for the cover of it. We wanted to just strip it down. There are a lot of covers of the song. Ours is definitely the most stripped down. We really wanted to peel it back and it was a lot of fun,” he said.

“We come from a lot of different music. Sonics era, Stooges punk. And New York Dolls, Dead Boys, New York punk music that was really raw,” he described.
They are excited to release a new CD at the end of August.

“It’s called Unproven Shores. We’ll be releasing it at the SNFU show in Regina on Aug. 28.

“ It’s been a labour of love. We‘ve been working on it for a couple of years, he said.

“It’s definitely our most mature record,” he said.
“ A lot of punk CDs sound the same all the way through. This one is definitely not like that,” he continued.

“There’s songs in waltz time but there is still a lot of aggression. There’s lots of great stuff on it. it’s not just 4-4 time punk,” he enthused, adding there are no covers on this CD.
He is excited  to return to Alberta.

“ The last show in Lethbridge with the Ripcordz was the best. and the DV8 in Edmonton is like a second home to us,” he said, adding they are just touring weekend.
“We definitely are doing this in between day jobs and I’ve got little ones at home, so there’s no 44 day tours otherwise I’d return to an empty house,” he chuckled.

He said the Lethbridge show will focus on the new material.
“We will be playing quite a bit of the newer songs and some classics for people who have seen us before. We’re just excited to be back,” he said.
He noted they have never toured with Regina’s  Bats Out!.

“ They’re really good friends of ours though. We’ve played on a lot of the same shows together. and Scotty is in a band called White Women who played an album release party of ours,” he said.
He noted there is an active music scene in Regina.
“Black Thunder is from here and they tour Canada a lot. There is a lot pf great music here, not just in punk.  The scene here is  a pretty closely kept secret people are starting to get wind of, which is really nice to see. ”
He noted Royal red Brigade has been concentrating on finishing the new CD.
“We may do a video project after we release it, not that any of us know anything about it,” he said.

Royal Red Brigade, Bats Out! and Iskra play the Moose Hall, Aug. 7 at 8 p.m. It is an all ages gig with a bar.  There will be a $10 cover.
