There's a ringing majesty to "Turpentine", the first single from The Manvils’ new self-titled album, released through upstart Vancouver indie label Sandbag Records on August 11, 2009. With his throaty howl in tow, the thunderous sound of Mikey Manville’s pearly white 1956 Gibson Les Paul Jr. is a beefy double time beat amidst a chiming wall of guitars. It’s the first single off a decisive and strong-willed record, and with expectations as high as they were, it had to be.

With Hollywood actor and Manvils’ fan John Savage (The Deer Hunter, Thin Red Line) starring, the "Turpentine" music video boasts tranquil cinematography against the pulsating, anxious beat of an infectious song that charted on Galaxy Rock Satellite Radio from medium to heavy rotation in 2009.

Produced by Ryan Dahle (Limblifter, Hot Hot Heat), the album reigns true to the nostalgic era of rock n’ roll, being both recorded and mixed on the classic analog board at Factory Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia. At the core of the album’s snappy songwriting is a fresh, lively beat that forges a raw, pop-heavy sound.

In 2008, after starring in a national Budweiser advertising campaign that aired during the Super Bowl and the 2008 Beijing Olympics, The Manvils contributed eight songs to the Space Network thriller Never Cry Werewolf and provided the musical score for the CBC Humanity award-winning documentary Moscow Freestyle. Amidst all of this, the band set out on a major North American tour that brought them to New York, L.A. and Toronto three times in a mere six months.

2009 saw the hot streak continue for The Manvils. After being handpicked by Bif Naked to support her national tour, they graced the cover of Vancouver's #1 entertainment magazine, The Georgia Straight, and rocked the 2009 Virgin Festival main stage crowd, supporting Sonic Youth, Jarvis Cocker, Metric and Ben Harper.

Miesha and the Spanks

impressive songwriting chops of Miesha Louie, who is front-and-centre on the group's fabulous debut full-length, MMMade for Me." Calgary Herald, June 2010

SEPTEMBER 1, 2010 (WINNIPEG, MB) - Hot on the skirttails of 2009’s critically lauded “mmmade for me,” Calgary’s indomitable MIESHA AND THE SPANKS release “mean/fuck” – a 45 on Winnipeg’s premier rock n’roll imprint, Transistor 66 Records. In October, the duo will tread their rollicking confessional on a tour of eastern Canada to accompany the scathing dispatch set to vinyl.

Covering all the ground rules of love, loss, and lust, and often compared to a more punk rock, whiskey-soaked Neko Case, THE SPANKS waver the line between crooning country soul and garage-rocking givin'er. BeatRoute magazine tags their sound as “a punch in the heart with their close-to-home imagery and earnest, almost desperate delivery."
