Award winning saxophonist Brent Mah is an engaging modern improvisor known for his fiery, exciting and innovative playing. Described by the Calgary Jazz Association as "one of the hottest young players around," Brent has toured extensively across Canada and appears on two groundbreaking jazz CDs, 'Convergence' from Alex Goodman and Brent Mah, and 'Visions from the Farm' from the Karl Schwonik Quartet on Chronograph Records.

Brent's passion for music was ignited in his hometown of Calgary where he began playing piano at a young age. His piano playing has garnered numerous awards and scholarships from the United Music League of Southern Alberta and the Calgary Kiwanis Music Festival. He began learning the saxophone when he was twelve years old and has studied with some of the world's most prolific performers and educators, such as Campbell Ryga, George Cables, David Baker, Don Braden, Rob Scheps, Hugh Fraser, Kirk MacDonald, Stan Karp, Steve Kaldestad, Chad Makela and Jim Brenan, just to name a few.

Brent began playing Jazz very seriously in high school and he earned accolades from older musicians, instructors and festival adjudicators. Numerous awards were presented to Brent for his saxophone playing from William Aberhart High School, The Calgary Board of Education, The Calgary Kiwanis Music Festival and the Alberta International Band Festival. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Jazz Performance from North Vancouver's prestigious Capilano University.

It wasn't long before Brent began performing across Canada as both a band-leader and sideman. He has performed in major Jazz Festivals and Jazz clubs around the country while maintaining a busy performance schedule in and around Calgary and Vancouver. He has established himself as a versatile musician capable of playing a wide range of musical styles, a talented saxophonist and an exciting improviser. He is currently a member of the Karl Schwonik Quartet, The Spencer Cheyne Group, The Runaway Five and leads a number of his own projects. He is also a busy freelance saxophonist active in both Alberta and British Columbia.

Brent is a skilled and experienced music instructor as he teaches saxophone, flute, clarinet and piano. He has also been one of the organisers of the Calgary Jazz Festival since 2008.
