If you had to put “quotes” around Guerrista’s music you would probably need to start with “alt”, as in alternative, but alternative of what? Stating they are influenced by names like Zeppelin, The Beatles, and the Black Keys, Guerrista throws a curve at you with their tasteful version of Black Coffee. Playing mostly original music, this five piece group is a throwback to times of “heavy” blues. Add some “grunge” and “jazz” to the mix in an attempt to define their distinctive sound.
Lyndsay Johnston fronts the five piece group with vocals and lyrics that belie her diminutive frame, pixie sweet face, and demeanor. A powerful, beautiful voice combined with a sharp and witty pen make every song worth the price of admission. With dueling guitars, Patrick Thom’s “clean” and Taylor Jeffels’ “dirty”, Matt Danyliuk’s distinctive bass riffs all backed by Chris Henderson’s talent on drums . This band’s blues/grunge/jazz/rock sound hits a primal ear bone.

Guerrista has been together for two years and have been working hard to establish themselves in the local music scene. The Vancouver-based band consists of five members from all over Canada: Lyndsay Johnston, Taylor Jeffels, Pat Thom, Matt Danyliuk, and Chris Henderson. Guerrista has developed a progressive rock/blues sound with a retro feel that has caught the attention of music lovers of many different genres.

The band was formed in the early spring of 2009. Lyndsay, Taylor, Matt and Chris all met while attending recording school and there were often talks of getting together and playing music . It finally happened, and the others were introduced to Chris’friend and former band mate Pat Thom. They learned to write as a group, and continue to do so, coming up with their own brand of gritty rock and blues.

After playing live gigs in Vancouver for a few months, Guerrista continued to write and went into the studio with Engineer Brodie Smith. They decided to record live off the floor to give the songs a sense of Guerrista’s tight yet gritty rock n roll feel that they are known for live.

The EP, “Guerrista” shows the diversity, talent and potential of the band. Reviewed by Nathaniel Bryce in the December issue of Discorder magazine; Bryce writes:“it is fairly evident upon listening to their first self-released EP that Guerrista has some chops that deserve atten- tion. . . Playing plenty of shows and gearing to record a full length, here is a band that can go places.”
