A Tribute to "The Man in Black"

biographies

David James is one of the worlds leading, most convincing tribute artists in the music business. Most tribute bands consciously try to look, act and sound like their idols. Dave doesn’t have to try. A living prodigy to one of history’s true phenonomens, he is Almost . . . . . Johnny Cash.

Born on a small farm in Alberta, Dave was exposed to Country and Western music at the beginning of and throughout his childhood. His father, Gabe, made it his mission to introduce Dave to artists he referred to as “the real deal”. The King of them all was . . . of course   . . . Johnny Cash.

Dave's baptism in music was performing cover songs in bars and clubs throughout Western Canada and beyond.  Until one fateful night. A night that changed his life, and the lives of his band, forever.

After a show, Dave picked up his guitar at the bar and sang to a small after hours gathering.  After playing the last chord of “Ring of Fire”, he looked up from his guitar and everyone there sat with mouths open, speechless and  stunned at what they had just witnessed. “What?” Dave asked, concerned that he had lost his touch!  The silence was broken by a guy at the bar. “Are you Johnny’s twin?” he asked “because DUDE, this is what you should be doing”.  Unanimously, everyone agreed that Dave sounded more like Johnny Cash than Johnny Cash!!

So there you have it.  Some things are just meant to be.  Armed with that “God-Given” rich, deep voice, naturally gifted with the ability to impersonate, married to his acoustic guitar, Dave had found his destiny.

Sometimes in life, if you turn left you fall off a cliff. If you turn right, you win the Lotto.  Fortunately for Dave, that night, he turned right!
His respect and love of the song-writing prowess of Johnny Cash is reflected in his playing and performance. His firm belief in remaining true to the integrity of brilliantly written music is one of the primary reasons for the bands’ success.

Todd Sacerty’s standards are of the highest. He is steadfastly committed to reproducing an authentic sound, and for that reason his presence in the band is essential.

Todd – “Johnny Cash and his music are so revered by so many. It’s not really about us. I want to play my part in keeping the man in black alive”.

Colin Stevenson was “hand-picked” for his role as the drummer of “Almost Johnny Cash”.   His experience  and his ability to stay faithful to style, with the addition of crucial dynamics were deciding factors when Colin was headhunted.

Born in Victoria BC, Colin Stevenson is a long standing exponent of quality Canadian musicianship, and his chops, acquired through many years of treading the boards, are the heartbeat of the band.
Colin – “Cash was the man, it’s as simple as that. We bring back to the people what they are missing since his death, and long may it continue”.

Todd Sacerty is a highly respected and talented bass player.  With over 20 years of touring and recording experience behind him, Todd was a “must-have” when the band was formed.
