Cumberland is a dynamic pop/rock/country cover duo comprised of Jay Burns (guitar and vocals) and Sheri Dawn Young (keys and vocals).
Jay and Sheri met in Calgary in 2004 and have shared a love of music and each other since that first day. They have been performing together for nearly 8 years, beginning in 2005 where they joined forces in cover/original band, The Council.

The Council toured across Canada and released an original album in 2008, then parted ways in early 2009.  After that, Jay and Sheri poured themselves into their duo, Cumberland, and various original projects - both individually and together.

Cumberland has performed in and around Alberta for the past 5 years, and has proven to be the perfect entertainment package for pubs, corporate functions, Christmas parties and house parties. They can be found frequently on the stages of Calgary establishments such as Morgan’s, The Trop, The Riverstone Pub, The Last Straw, The Kingshead Pub, The Kilt & Caber,Richmonds, Olives, The Pig & Duke; at Rylie’s Cattlebarn in Okotoks and many more. “We love to please our audience and get a kick out of using an interactive approach to involve them as much as possible.”  In 2010, Cumberland was voted second best band in the Foothills
Jay has dedicated his adult life to the pursuit of music as a career. He started the Winnipeg-based band “Sans John Henry”. The band independently produced and released a 5 song E.P. and then a debut full-length album titled, “Zeal”. After repositioning themselves by embracing a harder rock sound and changing their name to “Fleshtone Rockets” (FTR), the band beat out over 150 acts from Manitoba and Saskatchewan to win the 92Citi FM-sponsored “Next Big Thing Contest” with Jay’s original songs. FTR went on to record a full length album in Toronto, and then released a 5 song EP.   In early 2004, Jay moved to Calgary to pursue a solo career and spent the next year working toward his first solo release, Letters.Vol.1 which was released at the beginning of 2006. Touring to promote “Letters”, the band became known as “Jay Burns & The Council” and eventually evolved into “The Council”. In late 2008, the Council released, "Recover" which has sold several thousand copies to date and charted Top 5 on a few Alberta radio stations.  The Council also placed first in the Alberta Big Rock - Rock Star Contest.  Shortly after the CD was released, The Council parted ways but from the ashes came Jay and Sheri's duo cover band “Cumberland”, who continue to perform in and around Calgary and Alberta.  Bloody Sundays is the latest evolution for Sheri and Jay.  Stay tuned for exciting new music and news from this venture!
Sheri spent her youth training in classical piano through the Western Board of Music, receiving honors up to the Grade 9 level before attending college. After graduating from Manitoba’s Assiniboine Community College with a diploma in Economic Development, Sheri moved to Calgary and began to revisit music. Adding acoustic guitar to her piano and vocal capabilities, Sheri became a well-known face on the local music scene; by 2003 she was hosting multiple open jam nights around Calgary and performing in acoustic duos & trios before meeting Burns and joining rock band, Jay Burns & The Council in 2004.  Working in the Human Resources field by day and performing and touring with the Council by night for the next few years, music eventually took the front seat.  She began teaching piano both privately and at Music Centre Canada and when the Council went separate ways in 2008, Cumberland became the focus of her performing efforts.

Currently, Sheri is performing around Alberta with Cumberland; developing new musical theatre project, Bloody Sundays, and has just released her first solo EP in October, 2012!
