Scotty Hills came into prominence in the Western Canadian music scene when he was still in his teens. While he quickly became known as that drummer in a blues band who could really sing; Hills was also a principal songwriter for their Juno, Wcma and Maple blues-nominated albums.
Raised on the road, he managed to settle down for a while to work on his live show and vocals, elevating each while attaining a solid degree of success at both.
Hills is one of those blue-eyed soul singers who is a natural and effortless vocalist. His technical prowess (a good working knowledge of pitch, phrasing, etc) allows a fine jumping-off point for him to really embrace the song. Hills is musical, and his vocal confidence makes him so relaxed with the songs he plays with them, casually tossing in some scat singing or even a bit of whistling, clearly showing the song some love. The tune in turn returns that love.
Songwriting all the while, last year Hills released Year of Septembers, his tour de force album. The songs are from the same family, yet the children are all different. Which is good. As well Hills play guitar, bass, and drums on the recording.
The tie that binds the whole artistic package in terms of writing and performing is again his instinctive, inherent musicality.
No surprise that the quality of songwriting on this last indie self release has caused an industry buzz; Hills was recently selected by the gold standard song publishing company Ole, to songwrite in an urban/pop songcamp at Westlake Studios in LA.
Hills is inspired and excited to turn the page to a new chapter of his already storied career.
