Many artists struggle to establish their musical identity, trying all
types of musical styles looking for a way to get their message across.
Others emerge fully formed, in full command of their craft, their
identity and their music. In a time where ITunes and singles overshadow
the journey that a full length album should take a listener on, Mike
Maguire’s new self -titled debut album emerges as a full body of work that takes listeners on a journey that everyone can relate to.
In 2009 Maguire released his first album "Things Unsaid" which was very
acoustically driven. After realizing that making music was his main
goal, he began to showcase his talent in various venues across Alberta.
During this time, Maguire played numerous gigs making sure that his name
and music were being heard by as many people as possible. Mike often
played to audiences upwards of400 people.
Mike's ability
to entertain crowds in a versatile manner is evident in his capability
to play with a full band in which he commands the acoustic guitar and
piano, or organically on his own accompanied by his guitar and loop
pedal.
"I love the way that playing my music live makes
me feel. It is a whole new experience and a nice change from playing to
my stairwell." Maguire jokes.
Maguire’s self- titled debut album is set to be released in the Spring of 2013.
The concept behind this album "is really hard to explain or put into
words. I guess the best way to explain it is life as I hear it in my
head."
Maguire's wide use of instrumentation and sounds
that are not heard on other mainstream albums, make this album stand out
from many others. Maguire plays many of the instruments on this album.
"My producer (Brad Lang) really let me take the reins on the album, and
I was able to put a lot of creative style into it, and was able to
change it as I saw fit. This ended up in us creating a deep body of
work, which sounded nothing like the original!" Maguire laughs.
After graduating from University, Maguire had an opportunity to travel.
Maguire was able to backpack to almost 20 countries. While travelling,
he was immersed in different cultures throughout the world, many of
which inspired him to write songs such as "From Where you are" which was
written on the Tarmac at a small airport outside Tel Aviv. "Wherever I
travelled, I tried to immerse myself in the thick of things, hopin’ to
Hell I'd learn somethin' or at least make it out alive"!
Conceptually, from the opening notes of "Words of Weapons", the album's
first single, Maguire's relevant writing ability and unique sound is
strikingly apparent.
Songs like "Don't lie to me" and "Wish
you were me" give a real and raw insight into "politically incorrect"
feelings following a breakup that are real and valid, but often left
unspoken.
Perhaps one of the most honest and intrinsic
tracks "Let Go My Soul" is a poweful and heavy hearted piano driven
ballad Mike wrote after watching several of his family members "fall
from grace" while battling with terminal illness.
"I
write songs when I need to get something off my chest. It's a way for me
to spew it out in all of its rawness. Then I'm able to leave it on the
paper, and the rest of the time I can be OK with things."
Maguire's ability to hook the listener is presented in "Live it right"
and "Take a Chance" which are inspirational and upbeat. The Whiny
electric guitar and raspy vocals in "City Lights" showcases Maguire's
wide musical range and vocal ability, while the haunting piano in "The
move is mine" keep the listener engaged throughout the song.
The album ends as powerful as it started with the last track "Shine".
With intense symphonic musicianship and penetrating lyrics he recalls, "Working with teens has helped me put life into perspective and see
how cruel and unfair it can sometimes be... but there is a resiliency in
people that shows up at the most unexpected moments... that is the
inspiration, passion and drive behind "Shine" and the other tracks on
the record."
Mike is already writing and polishing tracks for
his third album. He will be promoting the album upon its release. Mike
is all set to start a Western Canadian tour promoting his self -titled
debut album.
4:30-5:30— Delhi2 Dublin (dance/ rock/ world) http://www.delhi2dublin.com
We are from Vancouver BC. We invented the genre 'celtic punjabi
electronica' which sounds pretty dumb on paper, but is actually super
badass. We play really LOUD party music, so don't invite us over for
'that ethnic feel' at your next cocktail part cause 'that ethnic feel'
will slap your guests straight upside the bhangra muscle.
Many people like us, from little kids to grannies. seriously, our shows
are like scenes from an alternate dimension where people are nice to
each other and everything's ok. Delhi 2 Dublin is way more indie than
all those other indie bands cause some of us are actually from India.
Our latest full length album is dope. It has a big skull with lotus
flower eyes and a volume control for a third eye. It's called 'Turn Up
The Stereo' and it came out last year. We play a lot of shows. Like 150 a
year. We don't wear any crazy costumes, but we do play some freaky
instruments and jump around in a synchronized manner. Actually a lot of
our show consists of people jumping around and yelling and sometimes
stage diving in canoes. Listen, watch, party with us and be happy.
Delhi 2 Dublin was a happy accident born out of Vancouver's Celtic Fest
in 2006. Their sound started as an electronic fusion between bhangra
beats and Celtic fiddle and has since grown into anything from dub
reggae to breaks to just straight up happy dance music. File under…
best.
Founded by Tarun Nayar (of Beats Without Borders cred), Sanjay Seran (at the time hailing from live bhangra act Signia),
and Ravi Binning (a professionally trained bhangra dancer and dhol
player), the band started kicking ass on stages across North America,
with violinist extremist Kytami and sitar/guitar hero Andrew Kim.
Releasing their first full-length album out within a year of their
inception, it was obvious D2D had something people wanted. Word spread
about their ridiculously energetic live show, and tours grew from
regular jaunts across the country and down through the States, to
include festival performances in Europe, Asia and Australia. The band
kept up with the pace, producing a new album bi-annually and a remix
album alternating years.

With seven albums out, 2014 has
Delhi 2 Dublin releasing their very first, and much anticipated, LIVE
album, recorded at the iconic Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, BC on
their 8th birthday. This year also brings about more additions to the
D2D touring family: Serena Eades joins on violin (in lieu of fiddle
player Sara Fitzpatrick starting a family of her own!) and James Hussain
on guitar. Jaron Freeman-Fox continues being a featured guest at select
shows, along with former member Andrew Kim.
Described by one
magazine as the “United Nations of rock ‘n’ roll”, Delhi 2 Dublin has
become one of Canada’s most buzzed-about bands, and this was not just a
happy accident – see for yourself what everyone's been dancing about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU_2Aby8p00

5:30-6:30— Go For the Eyes (rock) https://soundcloud.com/gofortheeyes/sets/fifteen-through-twenty-unreleased
Members Jeff Turner (Vocals/Guitar) Elise Roller (Vocals/Keys) Scott Perrin (Bass) Nathan Raboud (Drums)
Perhaps it’s the various musical backgrounds of its members that makes
Go For The Eyes’ hybrid-blues rock sound so interesting- you can’t put
your finger on it but ‘there’s no confusion, just rich, deep, heavy,
velvet red rock that leaves a catchy lasting impression like a lipstick
kiss.’ (Mike Bell, Calgary Herald).
“We’ve been working for half a decade to perfect our sound,” says Jeff Turner (vocals/guitar),
“It took losing a member, disowning a whole album, and going through
months of writer’s block and research for us to finally find our soul.”
The transitional year proves to have been a silent morning bell. They
awakened in March 2013 with the release of Six Through Twelve, an EP
which earned them rave reviews across the country, an explosion of tour
dates, and a number of high-profile shows including opening slots for
Moist and The Trews, a performance at the Calgary Stampeders’ Labour Day
Classic halftime show, and the Flames’ home opener.
“This
album is just more grown up,” explains Elise Roller (vocals, keys),
“It’s about love, conscience, and mostly sex. No whining, no bullshit,”
which seems to be the reason why many classic rock enthusiasts are
latching on to this raw yet refined act. As music writer Lee Mellor
illustrates, “Go For The Eyes is a band who truly understands the
concept that it’s not what you play it’s how you play it.”
Finally putting on their big-kid pants with Six Through Twelve, nothing
speaks more of the new-found adult nature than their magnetic live show.
Sounding as though their voices were harvested from the same bloodline,
Turner and Roller are an irresistibly seductive pair.
With
the first successful release under their belts, Go For The Eyes will be
returning to the studio in March 2014 to record a new EP, Fifteen
Through Twenty, with award-winning producer Kirill Telichev. As Turner
explains, “I have only one goal in music: to raise the standards.” With
this in mind the band has turned their mosaic of influences into a
melting pot of genre-spanning domination- and they are ready to change
the face of Canadian Music.
6:30-7:30— the Dudes (rock) http://thedudesmusic.ca/
The Dudes, a Calgary-based band, infuse an emotional blend of Al Green and Flaming Lips – soul music and early 1990′s distortion. Dan Vacon, singer-songwriter for The Dudes since their start in the late 90′s, has the ability to draw audiences in through his distinct vocal style – a mixture of strong pop melody, sly double entendres, and pure soul.
The Dudes have produced several lo-fi releases since their inception, however their last musical offering, “Brain Heart Guitar”, propelled them from the Calgary independent music scene (where they were voted Calgary’s ‘Favourite Band of 2006, 2007 and 2008′ by FFWD Readers) into a more national spotlight, and spread their understanding of true rock and roll soul. The Dudes toured across Canada numerous times since the release of ‘Brain Heart Guitar’, with the likes of Pride Tiger, Two Hours Traffic, Hot Hot Heat and Finger 11. As well as showcasing at festivals like Halifax Pop Explosion, Pop Montreal, NXNE, Canadian Music Week, The Canadian Junos, and the West Coast Music Awards.
Recently signing to UK label One Four Seven Records for a 2008 UK/Europe release of ‘Brain Heart Guitar’, the band recently finished 2 promotional tours of those regions in 2008, and is now receiving an influx of positive reviews for the album by European blogs and magazines.
Brain Heart Guitar was released in 2007. The band’s second album, Blood Guts Bruises Cuts was released in 2009.

When electro-rock sensation Lights first hit the music scene in 2008,
she was just a songwriter with a synth and a dream. Her name may have
been pluralized but Lights Poxleitner was a one-woman show who played
and programmed her own instruments and sang her own lyrics.
Lyrically, Siberia is light years from her last, which was written when
the singer, who spent much of her childhood travelling to
places like the Philippines and Jamaica with her missionary parents,
had left the nest and landed in Toronto. “A lot of those songs came from
a sad but hopeful place. I was alone and pondering a lot. I’m a lot
more aware of the person I am now and each of these songs is about an
experience I’ve gone through,” she says. “This record came from a very
happy place.”
Siberia‘s beats skitter and thwack, the retro
electronics fire like decomposing lasers and the analog synths dirty up
her trademark pretty melodies, propelling Lights’ emotion-soaked but
still-cute croon into her sprawling, imperfect new sound.
Call it
anti-electro, dream-step or perhaps even grit-pop. Whatevs. Just rest
assured that it’s the same bright Lights; she’s just built herself a
bigger city.

Keys N Krates formed as the brainchild of drummer Adam Tune,
synth/keyboard aficionado David Matisse and internationally
award-winning turntablist Jr. Flo. The Toronto trio came together in
2008 with the desire to bring their blend of live electronic
instrumentation to the stage.
They've often been referred to as the worlds only "trap band," a title they reluctantly accept. Tune says it best: "At
the end of the day, people are going to call us whatever they want. We
are referencing everything from classic house music to Timbaland in our
beats, but I think the trap references tap into what the current sound
is, and we are okay with that."
Having toured their unique
blend of hip hop and bass music extensively across North America, Keys N
Krates put out a slew of original music in 2013. Their most recent body
of work, titled SOLOW EP, was released via Steve Aoki's Dim Mak Records
in September 2013.
The EP features KNK's banger "Treat Me
Right," which launched with the support of figureheads like Diplo, Major
Lazer, Flosstradamus, and TNGHT. It went to number one on Hype Machine,
continues to chart on the Beatport Hip Hop Chart, and remains a fixture
in DJ sets and car stereos across the globe.
Premiered by
Annie Mac on BBC Radio1, their second single off SOLOW EP, "Dum Dee
Dum," experienced a similar kind of success on the charts and has
solidified the trio as creators of anthemic party music with a quickly
growing fan base.
KNK has since explored their love for rap
music by creating a remix of "Dum Dee Dum." Featuring G.O.O.D. Music's
Cyhi The Prynce, King Louie, and Tree, the track has received glowing
reviews from the likes of Fader Magazine, Vice Mag, and NahRight. "We
had so much fun doing that rap remix," says Flo. "We can't wait to work
with more rappers and vocalists in general."
Perhaps what truly
separates Keys N Krates from the mass of Electronic and Hip Hop
producers out there is the unique show they create by performing their
bassy beats as a band, completely live. When you go to a KNK show, you
will see their music and the music of others morphed and turned on it's
head using only drums, keys, turntables and live sampling. This unique
style creates not only a crazy dance party, but an experience and vibe
like no other.
As a result, KNK have found themselves playing
some of the world's largest Festivals, including Lollapalooza, Electric
Zoo, Ultra Music Festival, Osheaga, and Sonar Festival (to name a few.)
As Matisse says, "Our favourite thing is playing live and bringing
people into our world."
