Tom Jackson

For over 40 years, actor, singer, producer, activist, Tom Jackson has crafted a compassionate stage of caring. He has embraced his life experiences, championed for the marginalized, and entertained a continent of concert-goers and TV watchers. His acumen has earned him recognition amongst his peers, yet he humbly perseveres as it’s the reward he seeks, not the award.

Born to an English father and Cree mother, he carries the legacy of his parents’ selfless manner of keeping the door open for anyone who might need a meal or a conversation.   While living on the streets of Winnipeg, his personal search for identity led to bonds with those outcast and marginalized. His voice became his way off the streets – figuratively and literally – and in to radio stations, television studios, film sets and theatres.

Penned the master of disaster, or minstrel with a message, it is music – his first love – that draws him to create change with the touch of a song, a poem, a musical or a concert tour. He annually takes to the road with The Huron Carole Benefit Concert Series marking 23 years of cross Canada travel raising awareness and funds for food banks and charitable organizations. Tom has recorded 15 albums – the latest release ‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime – in support of The Huron Carole.

For a younger generation of TV viewers, Tom is recognizable from his portrayal of Billy Twofeathers in Shining Time Station, and his guest role in Star Trek The Next Generation. Yet it’s his 6 years of playing Chief Peter Kenidi in CBC’s North of 60 that still draws comments, letters, emails and many hugs from longtime fans. The series was an inspired view in to the lives of a First Nation community and Tom inadvertently became a role model because of it. Taking the responsibility and possibility from that profile has led to extraordinary achievements in community service, professional development and global change.

Whether one links Tom to The Huron Carole – the song or the national concert tour – Singing for Supper or Swinging for Supper, the evidence of his earning and staying power in the fundraising circle is without question and one of infamy for this country’s food banks. When there’s trouble or trauma, Tom steps up with ideas to alleviate and compensate those devastated by floods, typhoons, fires, drought, terrorism, youth suicide, homelessness, environmental disaster and economic disadvantage.

His mantra of being in service to others is secured with his choice to engage if it’s good business, good for the world, and good for the soul. He can light up a room with his storytelling, endearing humour and self-penned tunes. He can inspire, uplift and entertain 10 or 10,000 and the gifts he shares, he carries from his ancestry, his life and his loves.

“You don’t have to change the whole world, you just have to change your world, and the rest will follow.”   Tom Jackson

Don Amero

Don Amero remembers it well. It was the day that changed his life. On September 15, 2007, he walked off his job as a hardwood flooring installer and set out to pursue music fulltime. And what a good day that turned out to be.

Since then, the Winnipeg singer/songwriter has toured coast-to-coast, headlined concerts, presented at festivals, performed with the symphony, appeared on national television, showcased in New York City, and played W. Brett Wilson’s The Garden Party (twice!). His music has generated nine national/international awards, and more than two dozen nominations, including the 2013 JUNO Awards. Today, Don has earned the reputation of being one of the hardest working ‘indie’ musicians in showbiz. No surprise, since hard work is second nature to him.

While a lot has happened for Don in a short time, it actually was a long road for him to get where he is. From the notoriously tough North End of Winnipeg, Don faced his share of adversity growing up. With poverty, gangs, drugs and violence all around, fortunately, his life was tempered by love, support, and faith. Shaped and molded by his own experiences, Don’s music carries the depth of hardship and luminosity of hope.

Don Amero captivates audiences of all ages with powerful and expressive vocals, percussion-style guitar play, and engaging storytelling. He is often called upon as a keynote speaker, and to deliver workshops for youth. His story inspires, and his message is one of encouragement, positivity and beauty. He continues to impress wherever he goes.

Beverley Mahood

A successful singer, songwriter, actress, model, and television host, Beverley Mahood is truly a dynamic entertainer. She returned to radio/video, in 2013 with “Hope and Gasoline”, her first single in 4 years. Says Beverley – “Lyrically, for me, it speaks of returning to, and starting fresh, with my first love, music. My life has been interesting and somewhat challenging but music has always been the steadying influence”. A new studio album, also titled “Hope and Gasoline” is due out in late 2014. A new single, “Sunday I’m an Angel” is currently running up the charts at radio.

Though in many respects a seasoned veteran of the entertainment industry, Mahood’s career is set for a new beginning. Her past includes several albums, Girl Out of the Ordinary (1998), Moody Blue (2004), Unmistakable (2009) and a partnership with David Foster on the female trio, Lace (1999), each album as diverse and acclaimed as the entertainer herself.

Beverley’s audience broadened in 2004 when she began hosting TV shows, the latest being the hit, “Pick A Puppy”, a family-oriented series seen on CMT (Canada) and GAC (USA). Add this, to a lead role in the 2014 TV-movie, Changing Seasons; songwriting credits which include Celine Dion; a performance schedule that has included exclusive performance for the G8 World Leaders, CDN Troops, The Royal Couple; a commitment to community that rivals her passion for entertaining, and the unique character of Beverley and her career shines through.

Beverley is a devoted supporter of Canada’s Food Banks with a focus on children. “As artists, we have the privilege of a voice and a stage. We have a responsibility to use that privilege so those without can be heard. Children need that voice.” Beverley is currently the national spokesperson for the Pink Mitten Campaign (Breast Cancer Research); 2014 was her 17th year hosting Saskatchewan’s, Kinsmen, Telemiracle, and she has been part of the Magna family in their charitable endeavors since 1998.

At this years CCMA Award show weekend in Edmonton, Beverley was awarded with the “2014 SLAIGHT MUSIC HUMANITARIAN AWARD”

Born in Belfast, Beverley lives between Ontario and Nashville. “I am a proud Canadian, I can’t wink, I can’t whistle … but I love my hockey!”

One More Girl

Britt and Carly McKillip – ages twenty-three and twenty-five respectively – hail from the west coast, and make up the Canadian country music recording duo, One More Girl. Their pristine blend of voices – the sort of effortless harmonies only ever delivered by siblings – and their consummate stage presence are rarely seen in such young performers. Growing up in a musical family, Britt and Carly cut their teeth on all things entertainment: they’ve worked as actors since they were little, appearing in many prestigious film and television projects, and have shared the stage with artists such as Toby Keith, Darius Rucker and Keith Urban. Most recently, the girls made their debut at the mecca of country music, the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and have since been invited back. One More Girl has just signed a major US record deal and is preparing to release their sophomore album along with a new single/video, “Speak of the Devil”.

One More Girl has shared stages with the likes of Lady Antebellum, Keith Urban and Toby Keith, and just finished up some dates supporting Jason Aldean’s tour. In 2010 Britt and Carly were honored with the Canadian Radio Music Award’s ‘Best New Country Artist’. The same year they won the CCMA’s ‘Rising Star’ award, as well as the BCCMA ‘Single of the Year’, ‘Group or Duo’, ‘Album’ and ‘Entertainer of the Year’.

When people get past the voices, they invariably note the One More Girl stage presence. Turns out these two have spent most of their lives in front of cameras. Britt played a lead in the critically acclaimed series ‘Dead Like Me’ and voiced dozens of cartoon characters including Princess Cadence in ‘My Little Pony’. Carly, meanwhile, was the lead character on CTV’s ‘Alice, I Think’.

And now with a freshly inked agreement with Open Road Recordings the music rolls on.

Shannon Gaye

Vancouver-based singer/percussionist Shannon Gaye is delighted to be performing in the Huron Carole tour once again. Shannon has had the good fortune to be a part of many of Tom Jackson’s fundraising musical endeavours over the years.

Shannon has been busy touring in support of her latest CD “Little Wonder” – urban music with matter for the mind. “Little Wonder” pays homage to Soul and R&B, an acoustic gem with a modern spin. Music critics describe her as “the slender singer with the big soulful voice.”

Shannon has performed her compelling brand of Acoustic Soul at festivals across the country and has completed fifteen cross-Canada tours. A number of Shannon’s songs have been featured in TV series and films in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. Recent career highlights include performances in New York and Los Angeles alongside Kristian Alexandrov and Jens Lindemann.
