Biography
Maker of "songwriting pearls" and with her "siren's voice" (Montreal Mirror), Orit Shimoni has been performing her own material since she was sixteen, in Calgary and then in Jerusalem. In Montreal, where she moved in 2003, she found herself immersed in a thriving musical community. It was there she met side-man Andre Kirchhoff and formed Little Birdie.
At a gig, Little Birdie was approached by Mark Goodwin, who offered to produce their debut album.
Since the release of Cinematic Way, the band has played Canadian Music Week and Mariposa Folk Festival, among many other shows, and gotten international praise for the album, as well as international radio play.
The album Cinematic Way was nominated for a GAMIQ award (Quebec Independent Music), and was named one of the top 3 Canadian albums of 2007 on CBC radio, alongside Feist and Arcade Fire.
Orit continues to do solo tours including an east coast tour this past September, and Alberta this past October, where she opened for Michael Jerome Browne in Medicine Hat and had the honour of having Billy Jones, long-time side-man for Stompin' Tom backing her up.
Little Birdie has recorded their second album this winter and is releasing it in the fall of 2009.
For the past several months, Orit has been living in Berlin, where she is recording a third album, and writing the fourth, while performing in Europe.
She returns to Canada this fall to release and tour the second album.
