Bio:
The Short of It:
All of the Above began as a duo of brothers and acoustic/folk singer-songwriters (Jared and Evan Cechanowicz) in 2002. Since then they have added another duo of brothers (Julien and Gaetan LePage), and are now touring as a four piece folk/rock band. All of the Above combines jam-band-style funk and rock rhythms, folk heart and soul, and harmonies like only brothers can sing.
Biography:
Founded by brothers Jared and Evan Cechanowicz in early 2002, All of the Above has always been about family. Sure they've been writing and performing folk/rock music together since they were teenagers. But they've always been brothers first, and a band second; and that's kept them together through thick and thin.
Right out of high school jazz band they started playing their own acoustic/rock shows anywhere they could: Open mic nights, coffee houses, and pubs. Through small stage shows they slowly started earning fans with their stellar harmonies, playful yet honest songwriting, and their standout acoustic performances. Through hard work and persistence they became a perennial favourite on the University of Saskatchewan Campus, and by 2005 they had delighted audiences from Saskatoon, to Vancouver, to Seattle to Boston.
But in late 2005, Jared decided to spend some time in Vancouver, and for the first time in their lives Evan and Jared weren’t living under the same roof. Now 1500 kilometers would probably have been enough to break up any other band, but All of the Above’s family ties helped them to create some of their best songs during this period, including their future hit single “This Car.”
With the band rooted once again in Saskatoon, and ready for greater challenges, Jared and Evan decided to add a bass player and drummer to the band. All of the Above has always been about family, and so adding another duo of brothers, was the natural choice. However, Julien and Gaetan LePage had a wildly different musical background than Jared and Evan. While Jared and Evan were performing acoustic folk shows on small stages, winning fans one at a time, Julien and Gaetan were playing packed-to-the-walls underground hardcore shows with their heavy-funk band Dingus. At first glance it might seem like a musical clash of ideologies, but by combining their musical backgrounds, they created All of the Above’s signature “summer-on-a-blanket” rock sound.
First imagine a playful blend of warm acoustic and electric guitar tones, courtesy of Jared and Evan Cechanowicz’s years of playing jazz and acoustic folk. Then add funky, danceable bass and drum grooves from Julien and Gaetan’s hard-funk and rock background. Now imagine them playing their own carefully-crafted, folk-inspired songs about letting go, being free, and summer love. Oh and don’t forget the added bonus: soaring harmonies like only brothers can sing.
Since touring as a four-piece in early 2008, All of the Above’s fresh sound has generated attention. The first song they recorded together, “This Car,” made ripples in Saskatchewan when it was awarded 2008 Single of the Year by the Saskatchewan Home Grown Top 30 Podcast, beating out the clear favourites Theresa Sokyrka and Shaun Verreault. Planet S Magazine proclaimed: "...AOTA have already begun to warrant their own page in the book of Sask music lore." (Craig Silliphant, Planet S Magazine, July 2008).
All of the Above’s live performance schedule has never been busier, but in early 2009 the band found time to begin preproduction for their first full-length album, titled simply “All of the Above.” If their first single “This Car” made ripples, look for All of the Above’s highly anticipated release to make waves all across North America when it drops in early 2011.
