Weekend art openings feature everything from cowboys to aliens

There are quite a few art shows happening Saturday night.
The Mueller Art Gallery features a display of Southern Alberta inspired Western art and cowboy poetry from from artist George Kush. The opening gala is 7-10 p.m.. There will be live music from Murray Nelson and the artist will be in attendance. Kush was born in southern Ontario, though he has been a proud resident of Southern Alberta for many years.

He was drawn to the art of drawing at anOsvaldo Ramirez Castillo’s latest works are among the many art openings happening this weekend. early age, being inspired by the scarlet uniforms of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, native culture, cowboys, plainsmen and soldiers. His primary medium is oil, ink and water colours, though he is also an author, actor, historian and a public speaker.

As well, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery opens two new exhbitions.
Osvaldod Ramirez Castillo is premiering a variety of works inspired by the civil war in El Salvador.

His work features allegoric stories and images of fantastic beasts, crazy creatures, mythological figures and a combination of all of them.


 As well Burlington Ontario born,  UK based artist Kelly Richardson premieres the Eruditon. It combines elements of science fiction and the aestetics of cinema. There will be a variety of alien landscapes, holographic trees and a lot more. The opening receptions for these exhbitions is at 8 p.m. Both of them run until March 6.


 The Bowman Arts Centre also features an interesting silent film/ spooky forest from Deergirl and the Magical Forest, the latest collaborative work from Robert Bechtal and Kathy Zaborsky. The opening reception is 7 p.m.


The Bowman Arts Centre is also  premiereing “Collection Agency,” a selection of works from  the Bowman Arts Centre’s collection at the Yates Centre though there is no recption for this exhibition. Both of them run until Feb. 26, 2011.
 On the way to those exhbitions , go to the Parlour (407B-2nd Ave South,) where a seven channel video installation will be  showing. Collin Zipp’s “Seven Stories” will be showing.

 Last, but not least, the Trianon Gallery (104-fifth street south)  is opening an exhbit of Rodney Sayers’ iconographs. The opening reception is at 9 p.m.
