It looks like spring has finally sprung, so get ready for summer with Shakespeare In The Park’s production of Shakespeare‘s beloved comedy “As You Like It.”
Auditions are Monday, April 29 at the Dr. Foster Penny Building (downtown on fifth street between 3 and 4 ave.), from 7-9 p.m.
“We’re looking for a lot of people it’s going to be a cast of up to 20 people,” said director Andrew Legg.
They are looking for an equal number of male and female actors both from the university as well as from within the community and aged 16 and over.
“We need a strong female lead,” he said.
“it is a Shakespearean comedy which has death, theatre a wrestling match and a clown,” Legg described.
As You Like It is a pastoral comedy by William Shakespeare believed to have been written in 1599 or early 1600 and first published in the First Folio, 1623. The play's first performance is uncertain, though a performance at Wilton House in 1603 has been suggested as a possibility. “As You Like It” follows its heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle's court, accompanied by her cousin Celia and Touchstone the court jester, to find safety and eventually, love in the Forest of Arden.
The play has been edited down by artistic director Kate Connolly to a smooth. hour and a half.
As You Like It Will be the second edition of this Shakespeare In The Park group.
“ It’s a fun play. It isn’t performed all the time. I enjoy the comedy in it,” he said.
“ It’s a really fun and dynamic play,” he continued.
They have already held auditions at the university, though no casting has been completed. Auditioners can prepare a monologue of do a cold read at the audition.
“And if you play a musical instrument, bring it,” he added.
Rehearsals will begin after the Victoria Day long weekend, two to four evenings a week. The show will run Thursday nights and some Fridays plus two Saturday matinees beginning July 5 and ending Aug. 9 in Galt Gardens throughout July and August. at 7 p.m. each night.
