Mostly local acts performing in Lethbridge this week

The big mainstream country show features Mobile, Alabama country-pop band the Band Perry, known for mega-hits ‘If I Die Young,’ ‘Done’ and ‘Better Dig Two’ plays the Enmax Centre, Jan. 16. The Band Perry show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $45-$80 or $179 (plus fees) for a Pioneer VIP experience including a pre-show acoustic performance, pre-show party with refreshments,  the Band Perry  tour poster and merchandise and a VIP laminate.


There are a variety of  different local acts performing this week. Sheldon Arvay and Scott Kanashiro will be playing classical music as the Fire Guitar Duo at Ric’s Grill, Wednesday, Jan. 15. Cal Toth returns to Ric’s Grill on  Jan. 18.
Karen Romanchuk will be playing her brand of folk and country music at the Mocha Cabana on Friday and Saturday.


 Toques and Beards play their unique rock music at the Slice on Han. 17. Also James Oldenburg has his regular Thursday gig at the Cotton Blossom Lounge. And local rapper Aerosubtle performs at the Owl Acoustic Lounge on Jan. 17 with El Chupacabra.


 The Owl Acoustic Lounge also features local band the Juxtaposers featuring Taylor Ackerman, Tyler Bird and  Don Cassell on vocals and guitar. He has a raspy, Creedence Clearwater Revival sound to his voice.
 Over at the Casino, local rock band Soup of Flies will be rocking the joint on the weekend, Jan. 17 and Jan. 18 . And don’t forget Steve Keenan is hosting his blues jam at Honker’s Pub, Jan. 17.


 There are a lot of open mics as always including the weekly Friday jam at Jimmy’s Pub and the Saturday afternoon open mic at Studio 54. Of course, the Owl Acoustic Lounge features their open mic every Monday and the L.A. Beat open jam on Wednesday.
 The  Slice has their weekly open mic every Tuesday.


 There are a couple cool prairie acts coming to Lethbridge this week as well.
Just announced, Panda/ Unicorn clad Moose Jaw based pop tinged indie rock trio PandaCorn aka Megan Nash and Brodie Mohninger plus drummer Ryan Schnell play the Slice on Jan. 16 with local alternative rock band Advertisement. PandaCorn released their  first CD ‘Synthesis of Opposites’ late last year.


 And even better, Calgary country band turned indie rock band Cowpuncher return to the Slice, Jan. 18. They have just released their latest CD ‘Ghost Notes.’ There is a $10 cover for the show.

 There is a huge event at the University of Lethbridge as well. Frostbite.2.snow takes place Jan. 17 on campus.
It features a rail jam competition beginning at 1 p.m. and live music after the event in the Zoo  beginning with Gray Area at 7 p.m. Gray Area, Calgary rock band Nikki Valentine & The Gypsy Ryders at 8 p.m., indie rock band Foam Lake, at 9:30 p.m. Vancouver blues duo Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer at 10:30 p.m. and Winnipeg hip hop crew the Lytics at 12:30 a.m.. Admission is $20 for the whole day or $10 for just the music.

Classical music buffs won’t want to miss the second of three concerts designed to celebrate Southminster United Church’s 100th Anniversary., Jan 19.

International prize winning organist Dr. Neil Cockburn will be performing beginning at 7 p.m.,  Jan. 19. He is  head of organ studies at Mount Royal University Conservatory in Calgary, is also director of the MRU  Conservatory’s Purcell Ensemble and is artistic director of  the Calgary organ festival.  He has a diverse repertoire of interests and expertise on a variety of instruments. Among his many accolades is winning  first prize at the Dublin  International Organ Competition. he will be playing  the Southminster United Church’s magnificent four manual Cassavant organ. Tickets are $20 (Children 12 and under get in for free)  They are available from Long and McQuade, Dove Christian Supplies and the Southminster United Church.
