Hatrix Theatre holding auditions for Lend Me A Tenor

E-mail Print

Hatrix Theatre is looking for a few good men and women to be in their October production of Ken Ludwig’s 1989  Tony Award winning play “Lend Me A Tenor.”
Lend Me A Tenor is  a madcap,  screwball comedy set in September 1934.

Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company welcomes world famous, Tito Merelli, Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only as Otello.

The star arrives late and, through a hilarious series of mishaps, is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he’s dead.

In a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Merelli's Otello costume and fool the audience into thinking he's Il Stupendo. Max succeeds admirably, but Merelli comes to and gets into his other costume ready to perform. Now two Otellos are running around in costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo. It was a sensation on Broadway and in London's West End.

It won three Tony Award and  for drama desk awards.
Auditions for the play are June 11 and 12 at the Moose Hall where the play will be performed.
“It is a very silly, fun mixed up comedy,” described director Karolyn Harker
“I read a lot of plays and this is hilarious. There are people running around, slamming doors and hiding in closets,” she enthused.

“And there is a good mix of cast. There are eight cast members needed, four men and four women. Every part is good,” she continued adding there is a nice range of ages needed as well.
“We need two men who are a little bit older, and two women who are a little older and two younger men and women,” she said.

“There is singing, though you don't have to be able to sing very well. It will be fun for all ages,” she said.
Auditions are June 11 and 12 at the Moose Hall at 7 p.m.
