Rock band Zoo Lion has been holed up in a dungy old cowboy boot factory on the wrong side of the tracks in downtown Calgary for the last year working on ideas for their third album. The jam space has provided them room to find their creativity and has seen them branch out across Western Canada on tour.
They even had their first experience of stepping on stage at a sold-out stadium rock show when they opened for Bon Jovi at the Calgary Saddledome in July 2010. That night 16,000 people got to take in their energetic rock show.
Joining forces in 2007, Zoo Lion has found chemistry that has synchronized their lyrical rock into a fresh new sound crashing into Calgary’s growing rock scene. Born and raised prairie boys, the band is comprised of the beating rhythm of Craig Aikman’s guitar, the groovy riffs of Matt Tysowski’s bass, the intense licks of Mark Heit’s guitar and the complex beat of Tyler Reimer’s drums.
Zoo Lion unleashed their second album, entitled Nothing Automatic (2010), last April to follow up on their successful debut album Telling Your People (2008). While tracks off their second disc were laid down at MCC in Calgary, both were recorded in Vancouver with the help of District Four Studio producers Aaron Nordeen and Shawn Penner in the legendary Factory and Mushroom Studios.
Zoo Lion has caught the attention of the music industry by winning a handful of contests, including a $10,000 win at the Rockstar 2009 contest at the Rusty Cage in Calgary in August 2009. They are winners of the 2009 Canadian Radio Star title from Calgary radio station CJAY 92 for their song Pry, which won them a week at the 2009 Canadian Music Week in Toronto.
Other titles under their belt include the 2007 Calgary radio station X92.9 Denim Lounge Songwriter’s Showcase and the $25,000 preliminary-round of Fuel 90.3 2008 Big Rock Star contest.
